THE FISHING BOAT RESCUE WORKED AND IT IS UPRIGHT AGAIN

Well if you read my Sunday post you will already know where Pheebs and I headed this morning.  Yes, at 9:15 we were down at the Bayfield harbor.  The partially submerged fishing boat tied to the wharf in the Bayfield River was still there and I suspect more than ever that its starboard (right) side was resting on the river bottom.  I could see a small cluster of men with one of them breaking the ice around the stern with a pole.  No sign of any heavy equipment on scene.  Pheebs and I continued our short Jeep ride around Bayfield before heading home again.  Figured I'd come back and check on the fishing boat progress later.

Back to the Bayfield Harbor at 11:30, I noticed they had a diver in the water around the stern section.  Two fellas in a rowboat were at the bow trying to get a deck hatch open with an axe and a crowbar.  They did get it open.

WITH AN AXE AND CROWBAR THIS FELLA PRIED OPEN THAT FRONT DECK HATCH
1:30 p.m. it was back down to the harbor.  Diver was out of the water and I saw 3 large green industrial diesel water pump machines sitting on the dock ready to go.  The fishing boat was still tipped to it's right side.

3:30 p.m.  Back down to the harbor.  Two big mobile cranes had been brought in with one ahead of the boat and one behind.  Took them a while to get the rear crane positioned but soon the lift was slowly underway.

THE CRANES ARE FINALLY READY TO START THE LIFT
One of the big water pumps began pumping water out of the boat and it was 4:40 p.m. when the cranes slowly began their lift.  Immediately I could see movement around the frozen water line of the boat as it began to inch its way back up to a steadier keel.

SLOWLY THE STARBOARD SIDE BEGINS TO RISE AND I CAN SEE A COUPLE WINDOWS
ALL WHEELHOUSE WINDOWS ARE NOW VISIBLE
FIVE WINDOWS IN THE HULL ARE NOW VISIBLE
THIS IS THE LAST PHOTO I TOOK BEFORE HEADING HOME AND I IMAGINE BY NOW THEY HAVE THE BOAT ON AN EVEN KEEL
Daylight was fading and the cranes had momentarily stopped the lift.  Don't know what their next step is but I will be anxious to see how they are making out tomorrow when Kelly, Pheebs, and I get back from London's University Hospital.  Kelly's ultra-sound is at 9:30 a.m. and we should be home before noon depending on the weather.  The forecast is calling for snow.

THE EVENT TURNED OUT TO BE QUITE A SPECTATOR EVENT TODAY

GROANER'S CORNER:((  Ronald and his wife were cleaning out the attic one day when he came across a ticket from the local shoe repair shop. The date stamped on the ticket showed that it was over eleven years old. They both laughed and tried to remember which of them might have forgotten to pick up a pair of shoes over a decade ago.  "Do you think the shoes will still be in the shop?" Ronald asked.  "Not very likely," his wife said.  "It's worth a try," Ronald said, pocketing the ticket.  He went downstairs, hopped into the car, and drove to the store. With a straight face, he handed the ticket to the man behind the counter. With a face just as straight, the man said, "Just a minute. I'll have to look for these." He disappeared into a dark corner at the back of the shop.  Two minutes later, the man called out, "Here they are!"  "No kidding?" Ronald called back. "That's terrific! Who would have thought they'd still be here after all this time."  The man came back to the counter, empty-handed. "They'll be ready Thursday," he said calmly.

WELL IT HAPPENED...ONE OF THE TWO BAYFIELD FISHING BOATS HAS PARTIALLY SUNK!!

In Saturday's post, I had a couple photos of two Bayfield fishing boats tied up to a dock with river ice around them.  I expressed a thought saying I was surprised to see them still there with ice forming.  Ice can puncture boat hulls, and so it did to one of the two boats.  This morning that boat named 'Last Time' was half sunk still tethered to the dock.  I think if it had not been tied up it may have totally sunk unless by chance it is resting on the river bottom.  I have no idea how deep the water is there.  Going back to the photo I took of that boat Saturday morning and comparing it to the other fishing boat there I believe it may have already slowly been taking on water Saturday morning when I took that picture of it.

THE ABOVE BOAT IS OKAY AND NOTICE THE EVEN BLUE BOTTOM SECTION ABOVE THE WATERLINE FROM FRONT TO BACK....NOW NOTICE THE BOAT BELOW AND HOW THE BLUE WATER LINE IS NOT VISIBLE FROM BOW TO STERN....I THINK THIS FISHING BOAT WAS ALREADY IN TROUBLE SATURDAY MORNING BUT I DIDN'T NOTICE IT AT THE TIME UNTIL I COMPARED THE TWO PHOTOS TONIGHT

 AND HERE IT IS NOW
DRIVING AROUND TO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE RIVER I COULD SMELL DIESEL FUEL AS WE APPROACHED THE BOAT AND I NOTICED LEAKING FUEL IN THE WATER
YEP, THERE'S WATER IN THE BOAT ALRIGHT

KELLY TAKES A PICTURE WITH HER CELL PHONE
WELL I GUESS I DON'T HAVE TO TELL YOU WHO THAT LOCAL HAYSEED IS
At first light, I was encouraged to see a bit of color showing through our pine trees along the eastern horizon.  Didn't see any tree branches moving so that of course meant no wind to drive our 19F temps even lower.  With that chunk of encouragement stuffed tightly in my pocket, Pheebs and I headed out the door.  Our cloudy sky even seemed a tad brighter than usual.  Having been into Bayfield the previous few mornings it was time for a change of direction so it was off to Goderich we ventured.  Our usual route down around the harbor netted a few photos of ice forming along the shoreline.  It wasn't long and we were on our way home again.

ALMOST LOOKS LIKE WE ARE LIVING ON THE CANADIAN PRAIRIES HERE

ICE IS FORMING ALONG THE SHORELINE
GODERICH'S HARBOR ENTRANCE IS TO THE EXTREME RIGHT
Aside from slipping down to Bayfield's harbor a couple of times today for some photos of the soggy fishing boat it turned out to be an inside afternoon.  Because of our cold temps, I started our rig up and let it run for a bit.  No chance of going anywhere but I cleaned all the snow off the windshield anyway.  A slight psychological lift I'd say.

GOOD THING THESE FELLAS HAVE THEIR SNOW TIRES ON

GROANER'S CORNER:((There was life before the computer::

An application was for employment
A program was a TV show

A cursor used profanity
A keyboard was a piano!

Memory was something that you lost with age
A CD was a bank account!

And if you had a broken disk,
It would hurt when you found out!

Compress was something you did to garbage
Not something you did to a file

And if you unzipped anything in public
You'd be in jail for awhile!

Log on was adding wood to a fire
Hard drive was a long trip on the road

A mouse pad was where a mouse lived
And a backup happened to your commode!

Cut--you did with a pocket knife
Paste you did with glue

A web was a spider's home
And a virus was the flu!

I guess I'll stick to my pad and paper
And the memory in my head

I hear nobody's been killed in a computer crash
But when it happens they wish they were dead!
