A SUNDAY DRIVE TO THE BORDER TOWN OF NACO………. ARIZONA

DSC_0030

BULLET HOLE IN DOWNTOWN NACO

The very last photo in Saturday night's blog showed where the previous blog photos were all taken but I should have made that clearer.  All the close up photos of the ice mushrooms (that's what Kelly called them) were taken around the base of that fruit tree.  Water from the hose had trickled down during the night forming that cascade of ice.  I have more pics from another tree that I will post later.

NACO ARIZONA…… BORDER TOWN OF THE PAST

It's nearly 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon & Kelly is outside getting a campfire going under cloudy skies.  We headed off to the tiny border town of Naco late this morning to have another look around.  We had been there in the spring but just drove through it & back to Bisbee.  Today we stopped on what once was the main street right outside the Mexican border gates.  It's a wide street & it is a dead street that ends with a barrier saying 'Road Closed.'  A narrow alley street leads east a couple hundred yards between old buildings to the actual border crossing point.  This town was probably a going concern years ago but for whatever reasons it has fallen on hard times & is basically a living ghost town.  One old store front head a bullet hole in the window.  Blanched & rusting metal signs have long since faded in the long days of the hot Arizona sun.  While standing with my camera in the middle of the empty street between forgotten buildings I could hear the boisterous sounds of Mexican music just across the border about 500 yards away.  How sad it was as I looked around me at the dirty street, peopleless sidewalks, & dark empty windows.  How ironic it was to hear the sounds of happy music coming from an impoverished country............just over the fence.  Naco's streets are dusty & the houses are tattered.  A few children playing here & there.  Barking dogs watch us pass slowly by & we saw few people.  Some old trailer homes back right up against the tall border security line fence between the two countries & border patrol vehicles are about the only thing we saw moving.  This was Naco Arizona....U.S.A.

The Turquoise Valley RV & Golf Club sits at the northern edge of town with it's fairways & greens splayed out on the valley floor with the Mule mountains looming on the horizon.   The little town of San Jose nestles at the foot of the mountains.  San Jose is now a part of the Bisbee complex.  We drove north along the border fence for awhile before swinging back up into the town of Warren, also now part of Bisbee.  On this drive I was reminded that it was this area where Walter's father had the homestead.  Walter was the writer of the book I read awhile back called, 'Henry And Me.'

THE TURQUOISE VALLEY GOLF COURSE IN NACO…….OLDEST COURSE IN ARIZONA

Kelly wanted to slip into old Bisbee to the sock store again & pick up another pair of colorful mismatched socks.  Mismatch seems to be the in thing now.  I've been wearing mismatched socks for over 60 years now so what's the big deal!!  I've even been known to wear my underwear inside out & put my head on backwards some mornings.  Grabbed a coffee at the Bisbee  Coffee Company & stood outside marveling at the downtown buildings & surrounding hillsides with their colorful  hippy looking houses & cabins scattered on slopes that only mountain goats would normally call home.  Not long ago a lady commented on the internet that when she visited Bisbee she couldn't get out of there fast enough.  Another lady commented about going to Bisbee once & will never return.  To each their own I suppose.  No big box stores here for those ladies I guess.  Some folks come with tunnel vision.  Browse a few shops, look for bargains, & then go away saying they have been to & seen Bisbee.  Yes, you may have been to Bisbee but you sure as hell never saw Bisbee!!!!

I was surprised by all the comments & emails about last night's post & I sincerely thank everyone.  And I also sincerely hope nobody thought I was soliciting comments.  I would never do that!!  I was trying to point out the importance of feedback for ALL bloggers.  There are a lot of great blogger folks out there who deserve to be recognized for their superb efforts.  Keep up the good work everybody.  And a special thanks from Kelly & I, Max, Checkers, & the Motormouse, to Cindy L from Dayton Ohio for your lovely email.  I’m going to send that one to my Aunt  in Sarasota  Florida!!

THE ROAD TO NACO

It's Sunday night now & the wind has picked up.  The sky is loaded with heavy gray clouds as the storm front approaches from the west.  I am seeing long tailing gray wisps of probable rain all around in the higher elevations.  Thick black clouds are obscuring the south end of the Swiss Helm mountains & the peaks are lost in a gloom.  I have moved the donkeys into the corral for shelter & tomorrow morning we are off to Tucson.............:))

TO-NIGHT’S SUNSET

GROANER'S CORNER:((  A tour bus driver is driving with a bus load of seniors down a highway when he is tapped on his shoulder by a little old lady. She offers him a handful of peanuts, which he gratefully munches up.
After about 15 minutes, she taps him on his shoulder again and she hands him another handful of peanuts.
She repeats this gesture about five more times. When she is about to hand him another batch again he asks the little old lady, 'Why don't you eat the peanuts yourself?' 'We can't chew them because we've no teeth', she replied.
The puzzled driver asks, 'Why do you buy them then?'
The old lady replied, 'We just love the chocolate around them.'

JUST SOME SATURDAY NIGHT BLITHERING & BLATHERING

DSC_0023

Some days have more built in spurts of energy than others but today wasn't one of them.  Had some plans to go into Elfrida this morning but we just couldn't seem to get off our keisters.  Well, I couldn't anyway.  We had cloud cover overhead first thing so it took a long time to warm up.  I do not get motivated well in cold weather anymore so it ended up just being a puttering kind of day.  Cleaned a few windows, straightened up a few bins & enjoyed sitting in my chair watching the birds at the seed ball feeder.  Neighbor Doug came over & installed a new battery in the ATV & that was about the height of activity for the whole day.

DSC_0034

Weatherman says some bad weather is heading into Arizona starting about Tuesday so we may be getting wind & rain.  Wind means tough sleeping & rain means 6.4 tons of Arizona mud in the motorhome.  And we have become aware of something else this past week.  The winds of travel are beginning to stir:))

DSC_0030

With the exception of maybe 4 or 5 days at the end of last March when we returned from the southwest I have now been blogging daily now for well over a year.  First started blogging in September of 07 & my blogger dashboard counter tells me I have made 676 posts.  That's a lot of keystrokes.  I have always been one of those people who have kind of kept records on & off over the years.  Diaries so to speak or just daily recordings in a school notebook.  I still have those books at home & came across them one day this past summer.  I have several scribblers dating back to the mid to late 50's when I sometimes wrote out my daily activities.  I was growing up in Tavistock Ontario at the time & a typical entry would look like this....."Went down to Bob's today & we traded some comic books.  It was warm this morning so we walked up town to Joe's Place & split a milkshake.  Bob always has more money than me.  Roy came in & said he heard John sold his old bicycle.  Bob, Roy, & I went back to Bob's & watched television because his Mom & Dad went to Stratford shopping"..................and so it went & so it went.

DSC_0036

Some of the diaries I looked back upon were more serious, like back in 1967 & 69 when things were really beginning to get out of control in my life with the alcohol & drugs.  Only one bad experience with the drugs so I consider myself very fortunate to have dodged a major bullet in those years.  A lot of my friends at the time didn't.  That one bad experience was enough to put me off that short lived lifestyle & steered me clear of drugs ever after that.  The alcohol addiction was another story but I'm getting off track here.  Just started out to say how happy I was when this blogging craze started a few years ago because for people like myself it's a great outlet at the end of each day to sit down at the computer & merrily blather on about the day's activities.  It's a way to throw out ideas, express feelings, record events, state opinions, let the creative side roll, bubble up some humor, offer advice, information, & just generally enjoy an enjoyable hobby.   And, for somebody like me with a basic fear of people (I think there is a medical term for that) it enables me to communicate in the only style I am comfortable with.

DSC_0027

I think the success of any blogger is in the readers.  How many of us would continue to do this every day or week if nobody was reading. I'm betting most if not all of us would gradually pack up our keyboards & just fade away.  There are basically only 2 ways for a blogger to know if anyone is interested in what they are writing about.  One is the counters like Sitemeter or Feedjit that keep a record of every hit or visit on a person's blogsite.  These meter monitors tell the blogger how many people have visited their site each day.  Some tell the amount of time a visitor spends on the blog, & some show what photos have been viewed.  Feedjit shows from what website the visitor came from & what blogsite they go to when they leave.  Both Sitemeter & Feedjit often show what city the person has visited from as well.   The other way a blogger knows if anybody is reading their blog is by the comments, shouts, & emails.  If a blogger isn't receiving any feedback from people but his metering counter is showing 75 people are visiting his site everyday it may mean that people are not interested enough in the content to comment.  It may be time for the blogger to rethink his subject matter.  So, if your out there reading my fellow blogger’s sites, send them a note & say hello from time to time.  Let them know your out here.  Let them know they are not just blowing smoke into the wind everyday:))

DSC_0035

Some blogs like mine are always way too long but I've always been a blithering blabberfingers anyway.  Remember those journals from the late fifties.   Tioga George has it figured out though.  Just a few sentences or maybe a paragraph 2 or 3 times a day.  People don't get bored & come back to his site several times a day to see what he's up to.  It's a good way to chalk up the number of hits on a website too.  I think George is way out in front of the pack with over a million hits on his blogsite & yep, we got the Tiogaman on our desktop as well.

DSC_0029

Well, for not having anything to blog about tonight it sure looks like I have blathered on as usual so with that I will quickly exit myself out of here...........stage right!!

SUNNY SKYS & WARMING DAYS

DSC_0003

WHITE WINGS OVER THE SULPHUR SPRINGS VALLEY

It's comforting to know there are others out there who have seen Avatar & had similar feelings to mine about the movie.  I should make one thing a bit clearer though.  I have never seen an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie or any kind of an action hero movie.  Just seeing the trailers & ads for them over the years is enough to know what kind of crap these types of movies really are.

CURVE BILL THRASHER                   STILL SIGNS OF CHRISTMAS AROUND

Clear skies to-day & we didn't get any rain over night.  While in Sierra Vista Thursday we could see dark storm clouds over the Mule mountains & on our way home we saw wet pavement west of Tombstone so for sure they had rain there.

DOUBLE WINDMILLS            HUBCAPS SAID THIS WAS AN OLDSMOBILE

Kelly headed to her exercise class this morning & I headed over to meet Belle's RVing friends Jeanie & Red from California who had arrived yesterday.  Nobody out & about when I got there so fed the dogs & checked the water levels in the troughs for the horses & donkeys.  Switched out some leaky garden hoses & re-arranged some others to make watering easier.  Another friend of Belles bicycles out from Douglas now & is helping around the ranch so Jesse came in, fired up the gator & fed all the critters.

BELLE’S PUPS WARMING BY THE FIRE               FEEDING TIME

Met Jeanie & Red later & as expected, they are very fine folks.  I've been in email contact with Red for the past 3 weeks so we had got to know each other a bit before they arrived here.  Red's blogsite is called ROJOS RAMBLINGS.   Belle was having a few email problems again so we all piled in the house & I was able to get her Gmail straightened out again.  Belle has had so many people come in & change things around on her computer that it is confusing to work on.  Somebody installed Mozilla Firefox & Thunderbird email awhile back & I find that stuff very confusing.  We've used Internet Explorer with Outlook Express for about 12 years now with no complaints.  We have Gmail, Hotmail, & Yahoo email programs but give me easy to use commercial free Outlook Express any day thank you very much.

DSC_0007

I was back home at the ranch about 1 o'clock & continued with some tree watering etc.  A quiet afternoon & I finally took the Christmas lights out of the apple tree beside the rig.  A FedEx truck rolled in about 3 with a package.  Kelly had been reading about the Hawking Directional Antennae device on the internet & ordered one. They are used for pulling in distant Wifi signals.   Some RV blogging friends have them as well.  We are still blowing the lid off our 5 Gig Verizon cap every month so we are seeking ways to cut our megabyte usage down.

AVATAR…..THE MOVIE:((

I had really hoped I would walk out of the theater with a big "WOW" factor under my belt but it didn't happen!!  I know I'm going to take a big hit right on the end of my chin for this but I was not that impressed with this Avatar movie like the rest of the world is.  But, that's OK because I'm used to being in the minority when it comes to many opinions & popularly held beliefs anyway.

First, what I liked about the movie.....yes, the special effects were very good & I especially liked the beautiful colored forest scenes with all those magical little twinkie boos floating in the air & with 3D glasses they came right out into the theater & softly alit on the tip of my nose.  And I always like those deep space scenes with spaceships & things.  The costumes, make up, & special effects for the blue people was done very well too.  But, that's about it.  Yes, the obvious hidden meanings may or may not have been there & you can look at the blue people as the north American Indians being trod upon years ago & the white man running them off their land or you can spin it to mean the great American Satin with it's greed & military mite in full domination mode against a primitive people, or, or, or, whatever.  Make it what you will but that's not how I saw the movie.

Maybe I have seen one to many G.I. Joe movies over the years.  Seen too many action hero movies.  Seen one too many 'big mega weapons' movies.  Same old plot, same old super hero's, same old dastardly villain, same old corny dialogue, same old big bulky machine gun & rocket firing steel behemoths like so many other Hollywood movies.  In fact I think they must have borrowed some of the big clunky two footed canon firing robots from Star Wars.  James Cameron probably cut a deal with George Lucas.  And what would a typical Hollywood action flick be without big guns & big explosions.  For sure I thought I was going to see Arnold Schwarzenegger appear at any moment with multi-barreled rocket launchers in each arm belching forth with full blown automatic fire blowing up every moving thing in sight.......in great huge giant fireballs.

Guess I was looking for something special from this movie.  Something with a WOW factor.  Something that would leave me with a feeling of awe.  A movie to send me out of the theater with that deep sense of mystery that makes one look deep inside asking questions & searching for answers.  Guess I was just looking for some good old reality magic too.........& Avatar just didn't do it for me.

Ok, I've put my helmet & flak jacket on so bring on the slings & arrows.

Guess I didn't really make it clear in last night's blog whether Ron would be returning to Belle's Silverado Ranch.  Yes, Belle has agreed to take Ron on at the ranch & Ron said he's looking forward to returning & beginning work on renovating the 3 small cabins for starters plus many other handyman repairs.  No start date has been set but I'm sure Ron will be on the job as soon as he ties up loose ends & gets things squared away where he is now.

The Avatar movie started at 3:15 so we were in Sierra Vista by noon because we are not 'last minute people.'  Quick trip to a pet store for dog food, popped into & out of a Loews, & went shoulder to shoulder with the locals in the normally very crowded Fry's grocery store.  Thought we would try an Appleby's for something to eat before the movie because we had never been to one before.  Not a good experience.  First & foremost I don't care for Roadhouse type places.  Loud crappy music was assaulted my ears from cheap little tin can speakers in the ceiling & it was 25 minutes before the first plate of food hit the table.  Mine came 5 minutes later.  I am a very easy guy to please when it comes to food & generally eat whatever is put in front of me.  This was not the best food.....but I ate it all anyway.  We will never go back to another Appleby's!!

GROANER'S CORNER:((  I got used to arthritis & I've resigned myself to the fact I'll have to wear dentures forever.  I can manage with my bifocals Ok,  but boy oh boy do I ever miss my mind.

SHOWDOWN IN THE HAY COMPOUND!!

IMG_1866

SEE YA RON, TAKE CARE & ALL THE BEST

When I left Ron at Belle's Tuesday night I had expressed some concern about him staying in the tiny cabin but he assuredly informed me he's a Vet, & therefore a survivor plus this is the west & things are done much differently than in the east!!  I headed over to Belle's earlier than usual to check on the resident survivor figuring he's gonna be mighty hungry.  Ron was already out walking around the property & had already found his way to Douglas & back.  He had a catalytic heater with him in the cabin last night but it had ran out of fuel an hour after he turned it on so he had a bit of a cool night when the temps dropped to about 32F.  No other heat source in the cabin.  Now, had that been me I would have went out to my vehicle, turned the heater on full blast & stuffed myself right inside it!!

A partial cloud cover hung over the valley with only the occasional warming sunsplash passing by.  Luckily I was in my lined winter pants, T-shirt & two flannel shirts.  I think Ron just had a T-shirt & light shirt on.  Geeeezzzz, & I'm the Canadian too.  Supposed to be used to the cold, right...........wrong!!

IMG_1857

Jesse, a friend of Belle's was there repairing a broken water pipe so he brought the Gator over for Ron & I & we headed ourselves up to the hay compound to load up some bales of alfalfa for the animals.  Right off the bat we knew something was wrong when we saw the 2 loose resident horses inside the wire instead of outside of it.  They had broken down the flimsy gate & were happily munching away on a wagonload of alfalfa bales.  Neither Ron or I have too many horse smarts but we knew enough not to get behind the big guys as we tried to calmly shoo them out of the compound.  Of course being novices we talked quietly to the horses trying to explain to them the error of their ways & how it was not good manners to be eating off the hay wagon.  Well, the horses just gave us a passing glance, never budged an inch, & kept on munching.  Voices were raised, arms were gently flapped, tails were switched, darting glances from big brown eyeballs were felt & the munching stopped.  Heads were turned & now it was a four face standoff.  Two eastern Gringos face to face with two very large weathered western Cayuses.  And we were between them & their food source.  Gunfight at the OK Corral thoughts flashed through my mind as Ron & opened fire first with loud shouts & vigorous arm movements.  Startled by the Gringo's quick action the white horse turned first & bolted for the open gate followed closely by the second darker horse.  Chalk one up for the Gringos.

IMG_1859

Loaded a couple bales of alfalfa on the gator, closed the flimsy gate behind us & went about feeding the first batch of donkeys & horses down at the corrals remembering to check water levels on our way.  Just a week ago Cindy was showing me the feeding process & only days before that someone had shown her & here I was today showing somebody else.  These have been a fast paced few weeks on the old western learning curve.  You might have guessed that by the time we headed back for our second load of hay the two wily horse guys had pulverized the gate again & were back to their favorite free smorgasbord of yummy alfalfa.  Well, there was no pussyfooting around this time as we Gringos turfed those 2 horse guys right out of there.....toote suite!!  It was obvious we were going to have pool our engineering prowess & construct us stronger gate........and that is what we did.  The dark colored horse came back around for a closer look see as to what the 2 novice easterners (Ron's originally from around New York) were up to, pawed the ground, gave us an unapproving snort & trotted off with it's tail in the air.  Took us about 20 minutes to wire together some kind of a mossmagator gate & by the time I left the Silverado about an hour later the horsey guys hadn't figured their way back in yet.

IMG_1861

HAY WAGON IN THE BACKGROUND WITH RON STRENGTHENING THE GATE & A BIG RASCALLY HORSE LOOKING ON

It was about time for Ron to head back to New Mexico so it was time to go in & talk to Belle.  We seated ourselves down in the small area just inside the door where Belle has her computer.  Couldn't help but think this was a meeting of the minds as I sat & listened to Belle & Ron talk over the possibility of Ron coming back to stay at the Silverado ranch.  Each laid out their expectations & concerns.  There were some hand gestures, a few good laughs, some shuffling of feet, a bit of serious gazing, & a few stories told.  But, more than anything there was an understanding between a couple individuals who 24 hours earlier had never met one another.  I could see a trust being forged here.  I felt, as I sat there, very privileged to be a part of what I was sitting in on.  I had a feeling again that I was learning something very special here.  I was witness to something that I had a feeling will somehow come back to me someday in the future with a positive outcome.

IMG_1863

The pow wow wrapped up in about 20 minutes & it was time for Ron to head out.  Talked beside his truck for a few minutes about the future of the ranch & Belle's well being & with a wave he was headed on down the road.  Might meet Ron again someday, might not.

I did a final check of a couple watering troughs, said good-bye to Belle & headed off down to Douglas under cool cloudy skies.  I was appalled at the smog hanging over the city as I descended from a slightly higher altitude and, I could smell it.  Even some of the closer mountain peaks were smogged in.  So disheartening to see this in a land of beautiful mountains, big blue sunny skies, & supposedly miles upon miles of fresh clean air, under a blanket of pollution.

Stopped at the Napa dealer & picked up a pre-arranged battery for the ATV back at the McNeal ranch, rumbled through the Burger King drive-through & totally destroyed by calorie intake for the next month.  By the time I got back to the rig I felt like a 500 pound bag of sludge!!  The rest of the afternoon was spent in a state of sludgy doze.  Managed to water a few more trees & haul a bale of hay out to the 3 donkeys & that was about it for the rest of the day.

IMG_1864

Tomorrow we hope to slip over to Sierra Vista & see the movie Avatar in 3D.  Haven't seen a 3D movie since probably back in the mid fifties sometime when it was all a craze to put on them goofy looking colored cardboard glasses at the local movie theater on a Saturday afternoon matinee & scream like nuts as the big lumbering dinosaur birds came swooping right out of the big screen straight onto your face!!!!!!

GROANER'S CORNER:((  I read this article that said the typical symptoms of stress are: eating too much, impulse buying, and driving too fast. Are they kidding? That is my idea of a perfect day!!

TWO TRIPS TO THE SILVERADO RANCH TODAY

DSC_5221

CAN YOU SEE THE KNEELING OLYMPIC RUNNER WITH BATON IN LEFT HAND

I didn't have any photos for the blog today until I remembered something I had taken a picture of yesterday morning so checked the camera & yes, there were the pics.  I have been watering trees & shrubs this past week by trickling water out of hoses.  Normally I shut the water off every night because of the dipping temps but it was cloudy two nights ago so knew it wouldn't be too bad.  Left the water on & in the morning at the base of a pine tree was this ice sculptor.  If you have a good imagination you will see an Olympic runner resting in a kneeling position with his head down.  You are looking straight on at the top of his head.

DSC_5228 DSC_5223 DSC_5224

Belle's re-start with the previous horse person didn't end up working again so this morning found me on the road heading over to Belle's to feed & water the horses.  I don't mind but we do have to find a permanent solution to this ongoing 'help' problem at the ranch.  It is so difficult to find just the right kind of person/persons for this unique position.   People willing to give from the heart & not get from the wallet.

DSC_5226

THE TINY KNEELING ICE MAN IN PERSPECTIVE

I knew the animals were out of alf-alfa & that a trailer load was on the way but didn't know what time it was arriving.  Nothing there yet when I arrived so I set about making sure all the critters had lots of water.  Another lady was coming in the afternoon to feed the gang.  I fed the dogs & all the birds & then went in for a chat with Belle.  Fixed up a few minor email program problems for her & then headed back home.  Rest of the day was spent relaxing.  Ron from New Mexico rolled in shortly after 4 P.M. & within minutes Ron followed me over to Belles 20 minutes away.  Ron is interested in relocating to Belles from Truth or Consequences  New Mexico where he has been volunteering at the DESERT HAVEN ANIMAL REFUGE  for the past 3 years.  Ron said it's time to move on & do something new.

Took Ron for a walk around the ranch pointing out different things & giving him an idea of where things were & what needed attention.  We then went in to meet Belle & chatted for awhile before it was time for me to head back to the rig.  Ron brought a sleeping bag, heater, (& I hope something to eat) & decided to bunk out in one of the ranch's small cabins.  It was dark before I left so told Ron I would be back in the morning & we would feed the critters together & that would give him an idea of the ranch's chores.  He's heading back to New Mexico tomorrow so we'll see how thing go from there.

BELLE & RON CHATTING IN THE KITCHEN

GROANER'S CORNER:((

A 4 engine propeller driven C-130 Hercules was
lumbering along when a cocky F-16 fast flying fighter jet flashed by.
The jet  jockey decided to show off.

The fighter jock told the C-130 pilot, 'watch this!' and promptly
went into a barrel roll followed by a steep climb. He then
finished with a sonic boom as he broke the sound barrier. The F-16
pilot asked the C-130 pilot what he thought of that?

The C-130 pilot said, 'That was impressive, but watch this!'
The C-130 droned along for about 5 minutes and then the C-130
pilot came back on and said: 'What did you think of
that?'  Puzzled, the F-16 pilot asked, 'What the heck did
you do?'  The C-130 pilot chuckled. 'I stood up, stretched
my legs, walked to the back, took a bathroom break, then
got a cup of coffee and a cinnamon roll…….so there!!'
