JEEPIN WITH THE PHEEBS TODAY
IT’S A BIRD, IT’S A PLANE, NO….IT’S SUPER PHEEBS:))
It was a hat, winter jacket and hands in your pockets kind of morning walk with a slight breeze bringing cooler temperatures to the area. Could be in for some cold and cloudy days now until next week sometime.
OUR THURSDAY MORNING SUNRISE
Wind gusts always sound way worse than they really are when your in an RV. Seems every little nook and cranny on the outside of the rig sets up it’s own howling and whooshing. The winds weren’t that bad in the night but of course they had me up at 1 a.m. sitting in my chair with the computer on my lap. Yep, still having my usual sleeping problems:((
IT WAS A COLD ‘HANDS IN YOUR POCKETS’ KIND OF MORNING
The Pheebs has taken to this desert living like a fish to water and loves racing up and down the washes through the Mesquite trees and Saguaros. Only one pesky sticker so far and she seems to have learned quickly to avoid them. With the rocky surface here her paws are toughening up right quick. She is just the happiest little girl bounding over hill and dale.
PHEEBS LOOKS BACK IN THE DIRECTION OF OUR MOTOR HOME TOP LEFT
The skies were alive with roaring thunder this morning as the A-10 Warthog fly boys out of the Davis Monthan Air Base in Tuscon criss crossed our area in low level passes. They had their deadly air to ground twin turbine jets just a whining. I love watching these guys in their aerial ballets. Unseen and much higher in the sky were the F-16’s, F-18’s and probably the new F-22 Raptor fighter jets. They could be heard pulling their roaring and erratic high speed G turns in mock combat with each other. Rare for them to ever come down to the deck where they can be seen but I did see one pulling a high speed low level turn near Hickiwan Trails a few years ago. Got a picture of him too. This whole southern end of Arizona is a huge aerial training ground for the American Air Force. Being an airplane kind of guy I don’t mind the roaring thunder in the skies and I especially like watching their aerial combat maneuvers at night as their blinking lights dart among the stars.
SOMETIMES THE LITTLE MOTORMOUSE RUNS OUT OF GAS ON OUR MORNING WALKS
Our Verizon signal has been better since putting the modem on the roof and we are not having the problems we first did when arriving here. Our speeds are a bit better. I would say for anyone new to boondocking, this Darby Wells area is a great place to get your feet wet because it’s a short drive into Ajo for supplies and you will be hard pressed to find a more scenic example of the Sonoran desert in a natural peace and quiet setting. Nearest major shopping centers are either Casa Grande or Buckeye with Casa Grande being 103 miles and Buckeye being 77 miles. Buckeye is the easier drive straight north up through Gila Bend. Ajo to Gila Bend is 43 miles with another 118 miles to Yuma. And, that’s our little geography lesson for today:))
LOTS OF NICE JEEP ROADS IN THE DARBY WELLS AREA
We did fight with the satellite stuff again this morning and re-instituted our new receiver. Kelly spent a lot of time on Skype again talking to the Shaw Direct satellite TV people. Ever since beginning our RV days back in 06 I wished we had a dollar for every minute we have spent on this satellite stuff because for sure we could probably go out and buy us a brand spanking new snappity-doo 40’ Diesel banger:)) We did manage to finally achieve TV satellite success around noon today. About time too because I was about ready to just load the whole thing up, drive it into Ajo and throw the whole kitnkabootle into a dumpster!!
THIS IS NOT MY IDEA OF A SECURE OR EASY TO USE SATELLITE DISH SET-UP
Mike from MIKE AND PAT'S TRAVELS sent us a link to the place where he bought a logical leg adjusting tripod a few years back and after checking the tri-pod out on line we are going to order the medium heavy duty pod. Don, from Manitoba also sent us the same site so that confirms the quality of the adjustable leg tripod. Our previous tri-pod was leg adjusting and if your out boon docking in places like we are where the ground can be very un-level or rocky it is important to be able to adjust the legs. Flat based tripods are fine for flat ground in RV Parks but not so good out here in the boonies.
By 11 a.m. the cloud cover overhead was solid and the temps had dropped to 59F. At 1:25 it began to rain. Not nice!! Couldn’t get myself warm no how for the whole day. Due to a small problem I’m having with my left leg I stayed in my Poang chair most of the day under a warm blanket.
STAYED INSIDE TODAY KEEPING WARM
The Bayfield Bunch welcomes new blog follower Johnna today. Don’t know where you are Johnna but could you send us a little warm air over here to southern Arizona. Thanks for dropping by.
Close call for our Verizon modem this afternoon. We had put it on the roof of the rig a few days ago in an attempt to improve our weak signal. Remember me mentioning earlier about it raining today…..yep we forgot the modem was up on the roof. About 6 tonight we were rather suddenly and totally ‘off line’. Kelly remembered the modem and I scrambled up on the roof, unplugged it and brought it in. The two lights on it appeared normal so Kelly plugged it in and we were once again back on line…..barely. Climbed back up on the roof, flashlight in hand this time, plugged the modem back in and put a plastic container over the modem. And a rock on the container to keep it from blowing away. Kelly hollered up that we were on line again so it looks like we dodged a nasty modem melt down. Oh these forgetful Senior moments.
OUR INDOOR VERIZON MODEM…..OUTSIDE ON THE ROOF
I have been taking the Pheebs out for a walk before supper most nights but with today’s rainy drizzle Kelly suggested Pheebs and I go Jeeping instead. Great idea.
HI-HO HI-HO IT’S OFF A JEEPIN WE GO
There are some great Jeep roads running through the Darby Wells area so Pheebs and I headed out in full four wheel drive mode to see what trouble we could get ourselves into. Pretty hard to get into trouble with the sure footedness of a Jeep though. We had a great time, mainly in first gear, making our way slowly over the ruts, boulders, dry washes and rugged ridges. Picked up some cool new desert pin striping as well.
PHEEBS HELD HER PAW ON THE BRAKE WHILE I HOPPED OUT TO TAKE THIS PHOTO
We were bouncing around so much inside the Jeep that sometimes Pheebs was in the driver’s seat and I was upside down in the back. But, we made it and had ourselves a great time covering maybe 5 miles way back in the middle of nowhere.
Pheebs loved the ride but by the time we got back I think Pheebs was a little ‘green’ from all the rocking and rolling.
PHEEBS WAS FEELING A LITTLE ‘GREEN’ BY THE TIME WE GOT BACK TO THE RIG
I did just delete a comment from Mr. Anonymous again regarding my Wednesday post. Somebody obviously still has a very big chip on their shoulder. Thank you Rick and Elaine for your response to Mr. Anonymous before I deleted it.
SUNSET AT OUR HOUSE
GROANER’S CORNER:(( A police officer stops a woman for speeding and asks her very nicely if he could see her license.
She replied in a huff, "I wish you guys would get your act together. Just yesterday you take away my license and then today you expect me to show it to you."

SOOOOOOO LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING NEW THINGS:))
PHOTOS MAY BE A LITTLE SCARCE OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS UNTIL WE GET OURSELVES ON THE ROAD
I am almost afraid to allow myself a twinge of excitement this close to our departure date in case it throws a jinx into our travel plans. But, allow a twinge of excitement this morning I did, and what a great feeling it was too. I would have to say, the RV Traveling lifestyle is probably the number one favourite thing for me at this stage in my life and being only days away from another great southwest trip feels like a hurricane of fresh air blowing through my mind. I love the excitement of unknown destinations and adventures. And, above all, I love the feeling of being completely mobile and not being committed to sitting in one spot for weeks or months on end. Our time is our own whenever we chose to let the winds blow us on to our next destination. We do enjoy our extended times at the Ranch near McNeil Arizona but that is the exception to our blowing around like a tumbling Tumbleweed all winter. Sooooo looking forward to seeing new things:))
KEVIN AND RUTH had a question about why would we fill up with gas in Canada when we are so close to the U.S. border. Well, good question I guess and one to which I have no totally logical answer. Only way for me to respond to that one is to simply say I never thought of it. Guess it's an old habit of filling up locally before heading out on a trip. Having been out of the States for 7 months now and not being a guy who ever pays attention to gas prices it just never occurred to me to do that. I wonder if it would fall under the heading of a 'Senior Moment.' And Jo over there at THE WANDERING WISHNIES wondered why it is I can't eat McDonald's Burrito's anymore. Well, it's not so much that I can't them Jo but I have been trying to avoid wheat based products lately in an effort to see if all that doughy ooze I love so much has an affect on my health. Of course eating a whole wheat bread Turkey Salad sandwich didn't make much sense Tuesday and maybe those Burritos aren't made out of wheat anyway. I'm thinking there just may be a couple McDonald's Burrito's in my not too distant future now that you mentioned it:))
Our temps are still holding out on the mild side with 60F today under cloudy skies and a drizzly kind of mist in the air. Sure not complaining about the weather though if the temps stay like this. Thought I noticed on last night's news that we were the same temperature yesterday as Phoenix, Arizona. I'm keeping a close eye on the weather patterns right now south and west of us. Noticed it's 66F in Yuma Arizona today and 69F in Borrego Springs California. Those are perfect temps for hiking so hang on to those temps guys because we are headed your way soon:))
HELPS TO HAVE A BIG LAP AT OUR HOUSE:))
I once again spent time on Google+ this morning trying to gain some kind of concept into how this program works. Managed to change my profile pic but that was about as far as I got. Thanks for the response Sue. Saw a post by someone I finally recognized (Froggi Donna:)) and was able to respond to that. I did type a message into a box asking if anyone had any easy suggestions on understanding the program but........no response:(( I remember years ago how long it took me to figure out the concept of Blogger. After half a dozen tries at trying to understand what Blogger was and how it worked I was finally able to fit a couple pieces of the puzzle together and gain an overall understanding of the whole picture. I probably had the same problem understanding the concept and setting up Picasa and Facebook years ago as well but can't remember. I will try Google+ again and maybe again......and maybe again.
On our walk this afternoon I couldn't believe how fast Pheebe nearly ran down a Squirrel in a large grassy field area. Had it not been for a large Walnut tree the Pheebs would have caught the Squirrel. Pheebs does not appear to have a mean bone in her body so I have no idea what she would have done had she caught up with the little fella. Probably smothered it in smooches and knocked it out with her big strong wagging tail.
As much as I sometimes complain about CNN news with it's giggles gang in the morning, seemingly never ending commercials and their tunnel vision focus on repeating things over and over and over.....I'm going to miss the gang. The TV package we have with Star Choice while on the road does not include CNN so it will be next Spring before I tune in to Wolf Blitzer and the crew again. But, CNN is a treat compared to the aggravating morning network news program we get while traveling. More about that annoying noise when we are on the road again.
GROANER'S CORNER:(( My wife still uses curlers in her hair after she washes it. She came into the Family Room as I was watching TV.
I guess I stared at her funny because she said, "I just set my hair."
The last thing I remember saying was, "Oh, really? And what time does it go off?"

FROM THE SOUNDS OF QUIET BIRDS TO THE SOUNDS OF NOISY GUNFIRE!!
OUR TEMPORARY NEW DIGS SOUTHEAST OF PHOENIX SOMWHERE
This post is coming to you from somewhere in the Sonoran desert southeast of Phoenix, Arizona. We do not have a strong Verizon signal so I hope I'll be able to get this post published. We do have about a dozen TV channels with the antennae, & cell phone coverage is good.
MUST HAVE BEEN ABOUT A HUNDRED OF THESE MILITARY VEHICLES ON THIS TRAIN NEAR YUMA TODAY
We did not have a good night back in Yuma last night because of the miserable wind that harassed us again beginning about midnight. The winds were bad all afternoon but backed off around 7 so we thought that was the end of it, but 4 ours later we were scrambling to get our slides in again!!
The winds brought in cooler air instead of warmer air so we had to dress warm this morning before heading out. I had put things away & hooked the car up Saturday afternoon so by 8 a.m. California time we had the big wheels rolling eastbound. Twenty five minutes later we crossed the Arizona/California State line in Yuma & never looked back.
We had the wind at our backs & the traffic was light on Interstate 8 all the way to Gila Bend. Not a cloud in the big blue sky & the temps were soon up into the high 70's. It just felt sooooo great to be on the road again heading somewhere. I love watching the scenery going by & I'm always scanning the mountain tops for familiar landmarks. This was our 4th time on this stretch of road but the first time heading east. Kelly was at the computer desk behind me handling emails, the dogs wandered around with lots of room, & I enjoyed hot coffee with a tuna sandwich that Kelly brought up from the galley. Aw yes, ya just gotta love this whole Motorhome concept:)) Yellow & purple flowers abounded along the roadway & it was really nice to see the greening hills & mountains of spring.
Gila Bend is always an oasis stop for us because the north end Shell station is so easy to get into for dumping tanks & taking on water. We picked up a load of gas here as well. First fill up in a month & it relieved us of $150.00. It was high noon & by 12:30 we were headed east for Casa Grande.
There is a nice boondocking spot called, Jim Kortsen West Pinal Park about 20 miles west of Casa Grande right on I-8 & that's where we were headed. We stopped here for an overnighter a year ago & also back in February this year on our way west. But, by the time we got to Jim Kortsen I had already changed my mind. It was only 1:30 in the afternoon, traffic was still light & we were rolling right along so figured we might as well head on through to a place southeast of Phoenix called Florence Junction. Kelly had found a boondocking spot on the internet just of highway 60 so after a Safeway grocery stop in Coolidge we turned off the highway onto Queen Valley road. This road led a few miles to a bumpy dirt road & we followed this for a mile or so until we finally found an even more bumpy spot to pull in. We were proudly able to add some nice new desert pin striping to the sides of the rig & car as we wiggled & squiggled in amongst the creosote bushes & mesquite trees. We've got more dust & dirt on this old rig than they have in the average gravel pit. Give me that good old weathered look any day as opposed to that squeaky clean looking dealership lot look. Yesireeeeeeeee:))
This is also the first 'new territory' we have been to on this trip & oh how nice that is. As soon as we got east of Casa Grande today I once again felt that tinge of excitement returning as I looked around me with that little boy wonderment at new horizons, mountains, valleys, & canyons. I just love seeing new stuff.
This is one of those good news/bad news sites. First the good news. We are surrounded by green hills, mountains, Saguaro cactus, flowers, & all kinds of green vegetation. No people, no RV's & the scenery goes on forever. Now, the bad news!! We are also surrounded by gunfire at the moment. This whole beautiful area is obviously a hang out for younger people & a popular shooting range. Shotgun shells litter the ground as well as all the other usual litter & paraphernalia we always associate with younger people. Broken glass & garbage strewn about. Shattered bits of clay pigeons are everywhere so that tells us it's a popular area for skeet shooting. As I'm typing this I can hear shotguns going off somewhere to our right & to our left someone is firing with a high powered rifle. So instead of birds & the quiet sounds of nature, we have that horrid sound of buzzing ATV's, dirt bikes, shouts, & of course the old American standby here in the west................ gunfire!! But, am I complaining....................?? Well, of course I am!! And do we wish we were in an RV Park right now.....not a chance!!!!!!
Tomorrow we plan to not stray far from the rig. We'll climb back aboard the internet & see if we can find ourselves a better spot because we plan to do a bunch of day trips in the car around the area & we would feel more comfortable leaving the rig in a more humanly mature place. We have Apache Junction, Superstition Mountain, Lost Dutchman Mine, the 120 mile Apache Trail Loop & other spots in mind. I will also try & remember to put in our location co-ordinates tomorrow.
And just wanted to mention something else about the 'Blogs We Follow' post I had in last night's blog. I never flush anybody's blog down the drain, I just drop them into a desktop folder. I should have been more clear about that last night. I often pop in there, pull up somebody's blog, & see how they're doing & what they are up to. I also have people's blogs in that folder who I've never had on our site too. If you were on our list & don't see yourself on there now, it just means I've dropped you into my desktop file for awhile. You have not been flushed:))
And one last word about contentment.....I'm just one of those people with a restless soul. Never content for very long wherever I am or with whatever I'm doing. I've always been like that & it looks like I'm just stuck with it. But, it's OK.....I just like to complain about it once & awhile to keep myself on track.............10-4:))

BIT OF A NOTHING DAY:((
The winds took a break last night to recharge their Galactic turbines & were back in full force this morning again. We're not as much out in the open here as we were in Borrego but some of the gusts still rocked the coach pretty good.
NICE TO HAVE A FEW TREES NEARBY FOR A CHANGE
We fired up our generator after supper tonight just to top up the batteries. After about 20 minutes I noticed the sound of the generator changing. Almost like a rhythmic knocking or deep rattling sound. Not a good sign!! The noise got louder & I figured it must be a hole in the muffler & it was coming off. I started to get out of my chair to turn the generator off when it really got loud & I thought, oh no it's run out of oil & the motor is seizing up. I was about half way across the floor in a panic to reach the generator switch on the dash when all of a sudden there was an even louder sound.......but by now it was a sound I finally recognized. It was a helicopter going by low overhead & the sound of the blades had fooled me into thinking it was our generator coming apart. The military base in Yuma fly's a lot of helicopters out this way. The whole episode only took about 10 seconds from start to finish but I was convinced about the 9 second mark that our generator was done. I had just checked the oil in that thing late last week. Whewwwww, close call.
OCOTILLO BLOOM
Our coffee percolator gave up the ghost earlier in the week so Kelly was anxious to get that problem resolved & headed off to Yuma about 9 this morning. I wasn't feeling in 'mall mode' so stayed with the guys. Turned out to be one of those mentally tired days with no energy or interest to accomplish anything constructive. Resigned myself to watching morning television which of course is about as moronic as things get. Would you believe they were running back to back 'Beach' movies with Annette Funicello & Frankie Avalon. Those movies are sooooooo bad & should be locked away in a deep dark cave forever!!
FREIGHT TRAIN ROLLS BY THE IMPERIAL SAND DUNES - MILITARY HELICOPTERS FLY OVERHEAD - A CURIOUS PILE OF ROCKS
We are pulling in about a dozen channels with just the antennae so didn't bother setting up the dish. Eight of those channels are Mexican!! If you like loud accordion music this place just might be your cup of tea. Not mine!!!! Most exciting thing I did all day was (in the words of DOUG DUBROUILLET) go for a little dodder in the desert. Kelly was back about 3:30 with a boat load of groceries but no coffee pot. She is fussy about her coffee pots. I figured we could just punch a few holes in an old juice can, throw some coffee grinds in, & drain some hot water through it. Apparently not!!
Working on some more travel plans & we will probably roll out of this area Saturday morning.
GROANER'S CORNER:(( Two boll weevils grew up in South Carolina. One went to Hollywood and became a famous actor. The other stayed behind in the cotton fields and never amounted to much. The second one, naturally, became known as the lesser of two weevils.

BIG WINDS BLEW THE BAYFIELD BUNCH ALL THE WAY TO YUMA
ROLLING THROUGH THE IMPERIAL SAND DUNES
When I'm able to start a blog off without mentioning the word 'wind' several times in the first paragraph you will know we have progressed from wind blown RV'ers to Happy Campers.
The winds never let up all night so it was cramped quarters again with the slides pulled in & we only put the larger slide out part way when we got up. The wind chill factor probably had the temps down in the low to mid 40's somewhere as I struggled to disassemble the large oval shaped elliptical satellite dish. The wind wanted to dump me & the satellite right into the middle of next week somewhere. Not nice outside!! As much as we love Borrego Springs we were happy to be on the road this morning as we pulled out onto highway S22 heading east. This now marks the first leg of our looooong slow journey home. Or, it may be faster than we expected!!
THE SUN REFLECTS OFF THE SALTON SEA'S SOUTHERN END AS WE HEAD EAST
There was another reason for changing our Joshua Tree plans yesterday. No internet or cell phone coverage in that park & we weren't sure if there was any on Box Canyon road leading there either. It's important right now that we have cell phone & internet service because a couple of things have taken place in the past week that require us to be in touch with family. Kelly's 91 year old Dad was admitted to hospital near Rochester NY late last week & my 93 year old Uncle Harry was taken to the Woodstock Ontario hospital by ambulance a few days ago. Both guys are holding their own but at that age & stage of life things can turn from bad to worse pretty quick. We are presently boondocked about 10 or 15 miles northwest of Yuma on Ogilby Road with good internet & cell phone.
First stop after leaving Borrego this morning was the big new Arco station at the junction of S22 & highway 86. For any RV'ers in the area this is a great all in one stop. They have 13 free dump stations, 2 fresh water locations, multiple diesel & gas pumps plus propane, laundry & shower facilities. Lots of pavement to move the big rigs around & there are some groceries inside Kelly said. The propane gal came out in a golf cart & gave Kelly a ride back to the cashier's counter. Stay on the pavement though because the gravel areas are bomb cratered.
GAS, PROPANE, & DIESEL
The winds were blowing from the northwest today so we basically had a tailwind all the way. We have been this quiet route a couple times before & much prefer it to I-8. Went right through the Imperial Sand Dunes & the desert RV, ATV, & Dirt Bike community of Glammis. Last time we went through here a little over a year ago these huge sand dunes were alive with dune buggies, etc. Saw 3 riders today & that was it.
OUR NEW DIGS ON OGILBLY RD NORTHWEST OF YUMA
Last time we were in this area we spent Christmas here. We didn't go back to the same site we had in December of 08 because recent heavy rains have made a bit of a mess on American Girl Mine Road. We are about a mile northwest of our old site. If you type in Ogilby Road or Tumco Mine it might take you to our blogs from that time.
Very few rigs here compared to our last time her so we didn't have a problem finding a spot. Snuggled ourselves up alongside a row of 30' Mesquite trees & that has offered us a bit of respite from the still howling non stop southwest winds. In Borrego we had no protection whatsoever but here we've got a wee bit of shelter. I sat outside for awhile just listening to the wind in the trees. Music to my ears. Will still have to pull the living room slide in tonight though because that is the side where the wind is beating on us. We have 4 out of 4 green Verizon bars & that's without having to use our Wilson antennae too.
Our little Motormouse is not happy with this site because within minutes of setting up, an F/A-18 Hornet streaked over the Motorhome with a loud roar & scared the ba-jeebers out of our little mouse. I knew right away from it's markings that it was from the flying aerobatic team, THE BLUE ANGELS. I wonder if they train in this area. It was only a single plane & I watched it for a bit practicing aerobatics. Our poor little Motormouse was inside shaking like a leaf under my bed.
A LONE BLUE ANGEL F/A-18 HORNET (click to enlarge)
No idea how long we'll stay here. Just playing things by ear right now waiting to see how the fellas in the hospital are going to make out. Either one or both of them could be back home within days......or maybe not. We'll stay close to our phones & computers in the meantime.
4 PM temps outside now are 66F with wind chills in the 50's. Yuma is 10F below normal & the weatherman is calling for mid 80's stuff next week with winds dissipating beginning tomorrow. Now, how's that for a good old Canadians weather report eh:))
