One of the things I have always enjoyed about early Autumn is the turning on of the furnace for the first time filling the house with warming air. Today was that time. Had ourselves a rainy, damp & feeling cold day. Kelly switched the furnace on about 1:30 this afternoon & I just snuggled down into my recliner letting all that great feeling good warm air just envelope me.

HIKING BACK OUT OF THE CANYON & STOPPING FOR A MUCH NEEDED REST
A little discouraged to see they are already having snow in the Black Hills country of South Dakota. That is one of the areas we were hoping to see on our travels next month. All that snow in Calgary is not exactly encouraging either. Could be the one prediction we heard about winter coming into areas along the Canada/U.S. border areas a month early may very well have some truth to it.

We have always noticed how much better we both feel once we get ourselves to the dryer climate of the South-West each winter. Colder damp days like today really bother the arthritis in my legs so I'm looking forward to getting out of here before the really cold damp stuff begins setting in later next month. Thanks to the folks for sending in suggestions regarding the Capital Reef area of Utah.

HIGHWAY 12 SOMEWHERE NEAR BOULDER UTAH
Spent some more time flying around in my Google Earth plane this afternoon. So nice being able to fly over old familiar places we have been in the South-West as well as places we are headed for. Spent time touching base with areas around Bryce Canyon, Cannonville, Kodachrome Basin, Grosvenor's Arch, & Escalante. All places we visited back in November of 08. That Google Earth is just the best thing & the clarity in most areas is just amazing. Can zoom right in on old familiar campsites & even see the picnic tables in some cases. Oh the memories:))

I have a headache...
-2000 B.C. - Here, eat this root.
-1000 A.D. - That root is heathen. Here, say this prayer.
-1850 A.D. - That prayer is superstition. Here, drink this potion.
-1940 A.D. - That potion is snake oil. Here, swallow this pill.
-1985 A.D. - That pill is ineffective. Here, take this antibiotic.
Great pictures of you guys in the slot canyon and fantastic one of you there near Kodachrome. We've been without internet at Black Canyon so I haven't been able to comment and thank you for the shout out and say that I don't know much about Capitol Reef to Escalante. Wish I did. We had to turn back. Post about it tonight. As for the groaner, perfect except it needs to say 2014 - you need a procedure that will cost $200,000.

ReplyDeleteI am watching to see where you guys are headed, we are leaving about a week behind you.
Al, check our blog for Capital Reefs ideas. We were there to see friends that live in Teasdale (near Torrey). They took us on some amazing Jeep rides to see lots of unknown things. We, also did some great hikes. We were there in May of 2013. I think you'll like the Jeep trips.
ReplyDeleteDon't give up on your trip through Western Canada just yet. Back in the good old days when I lived in Montana we sometimes would get a few inches of snow bout this time of year and a few days later it was all gone, dried up, evaporated, blown away, who knows where it went. But the ground would be just as dry as it was before the storm. If you looked way up on the top of the mountains there would be a little white left over. A little cold weather brings out the color in the aspens big time.
ReplyDeleteAl, if you and Kelly have Qs about the Moab area or Cap Reef, send me an email. I know both areas pretty well, also good boondocking spots. You can also pick up a little book called "Explore Capitol Reef National Park" at the visitor headquarters at Cap Reef - it's a hiking guide I wrote for them some time ago.
ReplyDeleteAnd thanks for the good words about my book. :) Hope to run into you guys in Utah.

ReplyDelete2014 A.D. - That antibiotic is powerless. Here eat this root.
Some great pictures of your previous visits am sure you will be able to enjoy it again this year too.
ReplyDeleteLove the photo of Kelly framed in the doorway, but then I love 99% of your photo's.
ReplyDeleteI was probably the last person without Google Earth. Downloaded it yesterday morning and lost half the day "flying"! Your groaner is missing the last line :-)
ReplyDeleteOh dear, I have been thinking about driving to Milwaukee in Feb. for my brother and s-i-l's 50th anniversary, and thought I'd go through SD to have my drivers license renewed. I may not be able to drive anywhere that early in the year! I wish the midwest & northern plains would have a relatively dry winter and shoo the moisture over to California this year.
ReplyDeleteI loved your photos. Brought back wonderful memories of our time in UT.
ReplyDeleteBeen a long time since we were in Utah...amazing photos! I do love Idaho, too, but a totally different terrain...I don't think Dennis realized he can "fly" a plane on Google Earth..He was a pilot for a while..I guess I should tell him, but he spends WAY too much time in front of Solitaire on the computer already. ;-)
