HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT YOUR PHOTOS APPEARING ON-LINE WITHOUT YOUR PERMISSION??

DSC_0018

Had to dig deep into my sometimes elusive bag of interests, ideas, & writing topics today.  Not always an easy feat for me on cool cloudy rainy days.  Our intermittent rains began about 7:30 this morning & continued for most of the day.

How do you feel about your photos appearing on the internet without your express permission?  Thought about this a couple days ago when I read Cheryl Ann’s post over at DEEP CANYON.   The permission thing kind of bugged me at first but after pouring more thought into it after recently finding a lot of my Bayfield Bunch photos on GOOGLE IMAGES I have adjusted my thinking.  Not being a professional photographer earning a living with my photography I am not opposed to my photos being used in a format such as Google Images.  They are in fact using some of my photos for the same reason I post them in my blog in the first place.  One of the main reasons I take my photos is to share them with others through my blog.  If Google decides to re-share them with the public on their Google Image site then that’s fine with me.  Typing ‘Kofa Mountains’ into Google Images I actually found a bunch of my photos & even 3 from just a couple days ago when Ivan & I were hiking around the ‘Horse Tank’ area.  I also found photos of mine on the PANORAMIO program which is fine with me as well because in our first few years of RVing I would often pin-point the location of my travel photos & submit them to Panoramio to be used on Google Maps.  I kinda got out of the habit of doing that when we ran into so many internet connection problems & bandwidth limits for uploading photos to Panoramio.  Also while browsing through Google Image photos I saw a couple that could be mine but when I clicked on them they actually belonged to RV SUE.  And I did see some photos taken by Joe over at the RVING BEACH BUMS as well.  The Beach Bums are actually on our sidebar.  I do wonder how Google Images choses their photos though.  Is it actually a person or persons or does a search Bot just pick them off the web randomly.

THIS IS ONE OF MY KOFA MOUNTAIN PHOTOS I FOUND ON ‘GOOGLE IMAGES’ SHOWING OUR WINNEBAGO LAST DECEMBER

Kelly was off to Wickenburg this morning but it was a browsing/shopping expedition & I didn’t have any interest in sitting around in parking lots while Kelly browsed her favorite shops.  Pheebs & I held down the fort & kept the TV busy.  Basically the only times I went out was to feed the birds & bring the garbage can back in from the road.  She did say when she returned there was a big difference in Wickenburg’s weather from Congress.  No rain there & it was warmer.  We never got out of the low 40’s:((  Oh, & in the back of the Jeep was a huge used brown recliner to replace her recliner which she has never liked much anyway.

THESE THORNY OCOTILLO BARBS DON’T SEEM TO POSE A CONCERN TO THIS LITTLE FELLOW

A good day to clean some camera gear including the sensor in my Nikon D40.  Second time I’ve had to do that in the past 3 years.  Using the swab method from a company called VISIBLE DUST I again had success on cleaning that sensor.  When one cleans the sensor it is not the sensor itself which is cleaned but actually the low pass filter covering it.  The sensor is hermetically sealed.

  1. I don't think it's right that Google posts your pictures without asking you first, and/or crediting you with the photography. It's part of a larger picture of total loss of privacy, on every part of the internet, phone calls, etc. It's just not right, and Google being a huge corporation (that operates for profit) doesn't make it any less wrong. They will claim it is written in their privacy policy, but from what I understand it is close to 100 pages and not many people read it all the way through, which is what Google counts on.

  2. Anything we put on the internet Google will take, use or whatever. Photos can have digital info that shows who put it out there, and you can watermark. I've seen gobs of my photos on Google images. Presumably they're aren't making any money on it so haven't broken copyright law. Now what others do with those images we will never know.

Got a little color at sunset so hoping this rain has passed.

  3. Colin will contact someone if his photos show up without a photo credit. Just last week he was asked to sign a release to use one of his photos in a book by a Vancouver architect and he said no as that person had never paid him for the job years and years go. Needless to say we shall be checking.

  4. So I did a search, just for an experiment, and at least there is a reference to your blog site at the bottom of the photos, and if you click on it, you can "visit" page. So I guess that means you would get more traffic? Not sure if there's a monetary gain involved there though. Now I wonder if any of my dismal pictures are out there. I doubt it.

  5. Your pictures are worthy of world viewing. I will be using a friends pics for tonight's post, I emailed him and he gave me the OK to use them. It just feels right to ask before using.

  6. In Google Images, once you have done a search, you can click on "Search Tools" and then on "Usage Rights". I think you will find that the default for most pictures is "not filtered by license". Then there are two selections for "Reuse....", and two for "noncommercial use...". UNLESS you have given permission within the properties of the picture itself, you are NOT giving consent for reuse. However, the digital millennium copyright act does allow for minimum use of ones "work" under certain conditions. For instance, not for profit, educational use as long as it is a small body of the work presented. In other words, one cannot publish a hundred pictures of "Al's" dealing with Kofa Mountains. But for someone who is presenting an educational article in a non-profit format and they use one picture, giving credit to Al, this would probably be within the digital millennium copyright act....and if they used them only for themselves, it definitely would be within the digital millennium copyright act. I offer all of this only as my understanding of the digital millennium copyright act, which is complicated, but something I dealt with in my years as a Public Library Director. --Dave (GoingRvWay.com)

  7. If we post our pictures on the internet anywhere they will become available to anyone. So my thoughts are if you don't want them to be out there don't post them. Sounds pretty simple to me.

  8. Anyone who uses Google Blogspot is giving over access to all their content. This includes photos as well as prose. This is pretty blatantly stated in Google Terms of Service, where it states "When you upload, submit, store, send or receive content to or through our Services, you give Google (and those we work with) a worldwide license to use, host, store, reproduce, modify, create derivative works, communicate, publish, publicly perform, publicly display and distribute such content."

This includes Google services such as Blogger, Google Images, and Picasa. If you do not wish to give your content over to Google, I would recommend WordPress as blogging software.

    1. That does not keep Google from finding and displaying the pictures that you have posted to the web using WordPress. If you don't want Google to display your pictures don't include them in a posting be it Blogger, WordPress or any web page.

  9. While you state that you are not a professional photographer, that would mean that you haven't taken pictures for hire... But there is nothing amateur about your photographs, and I am sure you haven't seen the last of their reposting... Do they leave your Bayfield Bunch frank on the bottom, or crop it off....? That would be in bad taste if they do..... And if you put your work on Blogger, its theirs like the post above says..... Just for the record...

  10. I guess I'm still amateurish enough to be flattered when I find my photos on the web. Have no yett found the interest in copywriting....

  11. no problem with others using my photos, however if they are making money using them then they should share the wealth...

  12. Funny, you should mention this tonight. Earlier today I was searching for something on Google, and a couple of the photos that came up in image search looked just like you. After looking closely, they do say "the bayfield bunch" on them at the bottom. I think there are bots and crawlers trolling through all sites all the time. If you're a techie type, there are files and tags you can put up to warn off the bots and crawlers, but that doesn't always work for those spawned by the black arts. (and that's NOT Google, in my estimation.) You looked just like yourself, Al. And they offer people an option to see the image or go to the site, so it may generate traffic from goodness knows where. You're already pretty well known out there in the world, because of your beautiful photos. Keep up the good work.

  13. Just checked and saw a couple of mine there too, and as stated above my website was credited at the bottom and when I changed usage rights it went away. As an educator I often use Google images to try and show students images that will help cement a concept - but I also always try to sort by license so I don't infringe on someone's ability to profit from their talent. I enjoy your pictures, but if I wanted to use one I would check with you as the photographer first...it is only right.

  14. I don't worry about someone using pictures off my blog. There isn't too much interest in pictures with some or most of my thumb visible... ;c)

  15. Using BlogSpot I know my photos are open game through Google. It I were a professional who charged for my work I would use a different program to ensure stronger privacy/copyrights. I love that Kelly found another recliner, and it fit in the Jeep! I seem to remember the last ones showed up in a big truck :-)

  16. Google images is only a search tool that finds images on the web. When you conduct a search, you will see that there is a link to view the image in its original context on the page. Google is not publishing these images on its own.

Search using Kofa and you get pictures taken by many, many people all of them linked to the website where the picture originally was posted. Search using Kofa Bayfield and it will find pictures that were identified as Kofa on the Bayfield Bunch blog and show them first.
It is no different that doing a Google Search using a name. If your name exists somewhere in cyberspace when someone enters you name in the Search Box Google will find it and display the location information where it was found.
Google does not keep the pictures in a file they simply find them on the web.

  17. I have assumed that since I make no effort to protect them, anyone can use them. That does not bother me at all.

  18. If I ever see a picture I took on Google, I would take it as a compliment...I'm certainly not a professional, and rarely get a picture I consider amazing.
