MORNING SUN SPLASHES & OUR NEIGHBOR’S DOG DALLY IS STILL MISSING………….

DSC_0321

MORNING SUN SPLASHES ON THE DATE CREEK MOUNTAINS

No sign of Dally this morning as we walked past her yard at the corner.  All was quiet.  No doggy running along the fence beside us & jumping up for a good neck scratch.  No crying because she was so happy to see Pheebs, Kelly, & I.  We missed her.  Left our main gate open last night just in case she wandered over our way.  We’ll leave it open tonight again.  If she’s near she just may catch the scent of her best friends just up the road……….

KELLY HELPS PHEEBS WITH A STICKER & A NICE MORNING WALK IN THE DESERT

Bit of an overcast morning as Peter came along with us on our desert walk.  We explored along a ridge line where we hadn’t walked before.  The Date Creek mountains took on a magical hue as meandering sun splashes played across their sloping sides & rounded peaks.  We too were occasionally bathed in the sun’s warmth as shadows passed slowly around us.

Update on our CASTLE HOT SPRINGS Jeep drive Tuesday.  Turns out the 210 acre Castle Hot Springs is to come under the Auctioneers gavel on the 27th of February 2014.  Details of the auction are HERE & also another site HERE.  Opened in 1896, the 210-acre resort near Lake Pleasant once attracted prominent U.S. families including the Roosevelts, Vanderbilts, Carnegies, Wrigleys and the Astors. Long before he became president, John F. Kennedy spent time recovering at Castle Hot Springs from injuries he sustained in World War II.  Just thought some of you well heeled RV folks might be looking for a little get-a-way place on the side.

Turned out to be a very quiet day here on Ghost Town Road.  Plunked away on my laptop, watched Corner Gas at 2 & just kinda did the whole square root of nothing much.  Kelly & Peter spent some time at the Congress library.  I passed on lunch at NICHOL'S WEST.  Just never took me a fancy for the place.  Maybe because it’s a 5 star restaurant.  I kinda feel more comfortable in them there one & a half star greasy spoon places:))

For all you aircraft buffs out there you might want to remember to keep an eye on Tom’s blog TOM_KATHY_RETIRED.  Here’s a fellow in the mechanical know when it comes to aircraft.  Check out his latest post, CLUELESS, KNOW IT ALL.  Some nice photos of vintage aircraft here & Tom actually get’s some grease on his finger:))

KELLY’S STONE CAIRN BUILT ON OUR MONDAY MORNING ROCK SCRAMBLE STILL STANDS

I’ve never figured out how to answer the question, ‘are you retired’.  The query always leaves me fumbling for an answer because I am not comfortable with the word.  First off I don’t figure I have never done anything long enough to retire from.  Not a career guy, not like I ran my own business for a bunch of years or stuck with one job forever.  I guess to say I am no longer in the work force might be the closest I could come to the definition.  And besides, the word ‘retired’ refers to really old people who don’t work anymore doesn’t it?  I just don’t feel I’ve got that old yet.  What really hangs me up though is when someone asks, ‘so what did you do for a living’.  My unspoken answer is always the same, ‘well, ya gotta couple hours & d’ya really wanna know.’

EASY TO SEE WHY I HAVE TROUBLE GETTING INTO MY BED THESE NIGHTS

A curious email rolled in this afternoon from a fella over that Florida way.  I am thinking 49 other fellow RV Bloggers may have received the same email.  I’m skeptical of many things & I’m not sure if this email is legit or not so I’m asking my fellow RV Bloggers what they think of this.  Do you think this is ‘above board’??  When we clicked on the link ‘THE TOP 50 RV LIFESTYLE TRAVEL BLOGS’ we saw a number of familiar fellow Bloggers on the list.  Here is that email…………….   Hi Kelly & Al.  I just wanted to drop you a quick line and let you know that your blog has been chosen as a  “Top 50 RV Lifestyle Blog” by Florida Outdoors RV. WE TOOK US FOR A WALK AROUND OUR NEIGHBOR’S PROPERTY LATE THIS AFTERNOON

RV SUE has been doing a little decorating in her Casita & she has some ‘not so good news’ for RV’ers like ourselves who like boondocking in the Ajo area of Darby Well road.  I’m glad we got to camp out on the east side of the road while we did.  Slip on over to Sue’s site & she will tell you about what she has heard………And we still have not found out what the ‘big announcement’ was over in Slab City this past Sunday.  Anybody heard anything??

Thursday morning we will be saddling up the Jeep again & heading off on a search for some known crested Saguaros not to far from Congress.  We have seen one in that area but we hear there are 7 or 8 more near by.  Following that we will slide up to Yarnell for either a Pizza at the T-BIRD CAFE or some good old ranch style grub at Yarnell’s RANCH HOUSE RESTAURANT atop the Yarnell Hill.

SILHOUETTED DOVES IN FLIGHT OVER OUR BACKYARD THIS WEEK

GROANER’S CORNER:((   Did you hear the one about the man who opened a dry-cleaning business next door to the convent?  He knocked on the door and asked the Mother Superior if she had any dirty habits.

  1. I normally don't like to eat at restaurants, but my favorites would be the "greasy spoon" type.I sure hope poor Dally finds her way to your yard.

  3. Too bad about Darby Wells RD.We were considering going down that way.I am not surprised you have been chosen for the top 50 Lifestyle Travel Blogs.

  4. Do you think maybe someone felt sorry for Dally as you did and took him to give him a better life? I would like to think something like that rather than coyotes.

  5. Like you we are too young to be retired, we just did not want to work anymore. No careers, no pensions, just live a frugal lifestyle and love every minute of it.
Congratulations on the top 50 award.

  6. We were going to take Mike and Pat to Nichols West on Sunday night but as you know, that's the day we had to pull out and head to Phoenix. 9 degrees here this morning, missing that AZ warmth!

  7. We went to Nicols West and were disappointed by the high prices, and strange brown postal type package wrapping paper as table covers?? Strange.

Yes, the Slabs is all abuzz with an upcoming public meeting. Seems there are two different purchase offers from somewhere to buy the entire property outright and move/evict/clear out all the residents there. Oh my.... waiting to hear more.

  8. When I closed my web site, cleared out my studio, and stopped making thing for sale, I declared myself retired. My income is just about the same. Seemed the cost of doing business was just about equal to sales in the last few years!

People have told me I could never retire from being an artist. I guess thats true. my problem is that I like to create large three dimensional sculptures and that is not compatible with the RV lifestyle.

I to hope your doggie friend dog napped by someone who wanted her to have a better life. Maybe someone who read about her in your blog.
Dogs do not just take off on their own. Especially girl dogs.

  9. Amending my post Al.. not two offers, but two "applications" to purchase the land were turned in:

    on Friday, Jan. 18,
    his
office had received two applications to buy land—one to buy
    the
Salvation Mountain land and one to buy the Slab City land.
Public meetings will be held before any sale. To be notified of
    when
and where, send your request to jim.porter@slc.ca.gov. Include your
    name and phone number.

  10. It has crossed my mind that there might be someone around the area that opened the two yard gates and let the dogs out. I hope not!

The other dog plus Dally - gone missing! Strange.

Gates left open - strange. Why now?

Keep close taps on the Pheebs!!

  11. Congratulations on the award, Al, yours is one of the best and most interesting blogs I read.

    Very exciting, I think!

I hope Dally is okay - maybe the best thing would be for her to have been "adopted" by someone who is home during the day and will give her more attention. :)

  12. Al, reg. the Florida outdoors-guy listing: The guy became a follower with us a coupla weeks back and cited our blog in a newsletter. Then I guess after we wrote some negative stuff about his state he kinda lost interest. :-)) He uses these blogs for selling RVs.

  13. I think Pheebs is leaving yo a bit of space on the bed...you just have to scooch up a bit!

I think you deserve an award for your blog Al. It's a wonderful adventure to read and, of course, you always have such great pictures. I have to agree with Peter though. I went to that website and clicked on "Home" and it is an RV dealer. His "badge" on your blog is free advertising for him. Just my take on it and I could be wrong.

  14. Thanks for the mention and all those nice things you said about my blog. I do try and have a good time where ever I go.
We watched a Atlas Rocket launch tonight. It was a dark very clear night and it was 499 miles down range and it still looked like a bright star. Had a nice roar to it also.
