‘ROCKIN’ AT THE RANGE

DSC_0036
Pheebs was bursting at the seams to get outside this morning.  She had met a new little Pal yesterday afternoon & was so excited to get outside & play she could hardly contain herself.

ROXY’S HOUSE
We’re not really ‘parade’ people so I was surprised when Kelly this morning suggested we drive into Niland & watch the annual Tomato Parade.  This was once the largest growing tomato area in the United States.  Found ourselves a shady spot along the uncrowded route.  Jim & Rene pulled in next to us.  Must have been a very slow moving parade so after 45 minutes we decided to forego the parade & drive to the fairgrounds where they had a Midway going on with vendors…..and hamburgers:))

Only remnants we saw of the parade were some scattered high school band kids wandering around the midway later in their sparkly purple band uniforms.  One kid had a large Tuba stuck on him.

Grabbed a bite to eat in the community center, did a quick browse through the vendor stalls, chatted it up with some Slabber neighbors & headed on back to our rig.

NEIGHBOR & FULL TIME SLABBER JEFF WITH HIS PAL FRANCIS
Stopped at the Slabs swimming hole along the way because I wanted to get a few pics but there were a couple of naked women hanging out there so I discreetly did not take any photos.  We just quietly retreated to the Jeep & hit the rough & tumble dusty road back out of there.

OH OH, I THINK THE EYE IS UPON ME
I didn’t take any photos of Salvation Mountain this time here but if anyone is interested in seeing it I did take photos last time we were here just over 4 years ago.  LEONARD KNIGHT'S SALVATION MOUNTAIN.  And, I do have photos of the swimming hole, the library, the in-ground shower (where somebody was recently found deceased) & some other kinds of SPOOKY PLACES nearby.

Slab City has it’s own gang of in house & transient musicians & every Saturday night this whole place is just a jumpin when everyone flocks to the Range.  It’s reputation is known far & wide & is a place like no other.  Maybe a little scary looking in daylight but it takes on a whole new atmosphere and look at night.  Everybody turns out to hear the loud rockin music every Saturday night.  Ya just gotta be there……10-4:

AND, THIS IS BILL,  ONE OF THE SLABS PERFORMERS
I’m an old boozy music hound from way back in an era of time well cobwebbed in my mind.  An entirely different lifestyle where I loved nothing better to do than hang out in the old hotels & bars with a whole pile of friends listening to loud live rock bands.  I wasn’t countryfide yet in those days:))  And when I say it was my favorite place to be….I mean it was my favorite place to be!!  Needless to say, I was right at home at the Range tonight for the couple hours we were fortunate enough to spend there.  This was my lifestyle, these were my kind of people years ago.  No wonder I have a long lost sense of belonging at the Slabs…10-4:))

GROANER’S CORNER:((  One day a man ran into an old friend and asked him if he was still dating the same girl. "No" Replied the friend. "She wasn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier. Just the other day she decided to ride a horse for the first time. Without any instruction she hopped on and took off at full gallop. Everything was fine for a minute until she started losing her grip and began sliding down the side of the horse. She started grasping desperately at the reigns and the horse's mane. The horse kept it's pace up as she bounced up and down on the ground with the horse's hooves pounding away inches from her head. The horse might have killed her if it were not for an alert Wal-mart greeter who ran over and unplugged the thing!"

Slab City seems to have a bit of everything... well except for sanitation.

  2. I doubt I'll ever make it to the slabs, so you have provided me with that experience.

  5. We had a blast at the Range too. And the music was very good, some folks professional level, and some being creative. I just loved the dancing and mingling, even kids and dogs in the earlier part of the evening.

(but we didn't sit down on any of the "furniture" though.. heh heh)

Here is our blog post from that day: http://kareninthewoods-kareninthewoods.blogspot.com/2011/03/vacation-another-super-duper-chili-bob.html

  7. Looks like you and Kelly enjoyed the 'atmosphere and music' both. Another 10-4 on smoky, bluesy bars with some fairly understated local talent...yep, another life [and lifestyle]. Memories!!!

  8. May just be our kind of music too! And loved that joke. Hope you don't mind that I shared it with friends.
