I'm finally posting because no one has mentioned another possible reason for you getting "the shakes." It seems likely to me -- based on experience and knowledge -- that your illness was/is caused by a virus. Since heat can help kill a virus, people tend to get a rapid spike on body temperature when first attacked by a viral infection. In some people, this results in the body shaking, trying to cool itself off...which then results in the feeling of being extremely hot...and the cycle repeats itself until the fever is "broken" and returns closer to the normal range. Happens to my husband all the time, rarely with me. Actually, even though you feel cold when shaking, the worst thing you can do is cover yourself to retain the heat which your body is trying to get rid of (counter-intuitive, I know). Next time you get the shakes when ill, take your temp and see if it's elevated. Of course, it could be the reverse: your temp was sub-normal and you were trying to warm yourself up. Sorry - the way our wonderfully designed human bodies work can always be strange. Hope by now you're feeling better.
