MARSHALL ILLINOIS TO PORT HURON MICHIGAN: WE PULLED UP JUST SHORT OF THE BORDER AND FLOPPED OURSELVES INTO A CRACKER BARREL FOR THE NIGHT

A surprisingly quiet night at Walmart.  Pretty frosty first thing this morning but skies were clear as we climbed aboard I-70 heading east out of Marshall Ilinois about 8:25 Ontario time.

AN ILLINOIS SUNRISE EAST BOUND ON I-70
Reasonably light traffic all the way to Indianapolis.  The interstate seemed so rough in many spots I thought maybe drivers were using the country back roads instead.  We plowed into Indy traffic about 10:30 and after a brief disagreement with Garmin Gertie over correct directions the humans prevailed and Gertie was relegated to the glove compartment.  We took the northwest bypass, followed the overhead signs, and held our own with the Inday locals.  No problems but if we come this way again I’d probably do the south bypass like we did years ago.

TRAFFIC WAS REAONABLY CIVILIZED IN INDIANAPOLIS TUESDAY MORNING ABOUT 10:45 BUT IT DID HAVE IT’S HOT SPOTS

SAW OUR FIRST PATCHES OF ROADSIDE SNOW SOUTH OF ANGOLA INDIANA
Our destination for the day was Cracker Barrel in Lansing Michigan and with traffic rolling right along in clear weather and dry roads we were up into that neck of the woods about mid afternoon.  Probably because every mile brought us closer to home we felt energized and decided to slide by Lansing and stop for the night at Flint Michigan’s Cracker Barrel instead.  We could easily have pulled out a few more stops and headed right on home to Bayfield but we do not like arriving home late in the day or early evening.  We are morning people, remember.

Well dammit anyway if we didn’t miss Cracker Barrel in Flint!!!!  CB is usually good with their signage and thudding (bad roads) our way through Flint we suddenly realized we had not seen any Cracker Barrel signs.  Well I wasn’t about to turn around and go back looking for it so we continued on.  Too bad because we both had our hearts set on Cracker Barrel.  Decided to forget it and grab a Walmart for the night in the next town which happened to be Lapeer.  Well we never did find Walmart in Lapeer and to add insult to injury we got dragged right through Lapeer’s downtown section before finding our way back to I-69 a couple miles south of us.

GETTING A LITTLE SLEEPY
Back on I-69 still heading east we spotted a Rest Area and figured that would be Okay for the night.  It wasn’t.  Too many noisy trucks idling away so we kept on going.  Every time we have crossed the Port Huron/Sarnia border either coming or going we have always noticed a  big Cracker Barrel sign within site of the border crossing itself so that is where we headed and it’s where this post is coming to you from tonight.

A BIT OF SNOW AT THIS REST AREA NOT FAR FROM PORT HURON
Found us a nice quiet spot behind CB and minutes later we were inside and seated.  Fresh Trout for Kelly and I had my usual favorite open face roast beef with mashed potatoes, gravy, and cole slaw.  We have often ended our last night on the road with a nice Cracker Bareel supper and it was nice to get in one last Cracker Barrel because we both know it may be a very long time before we are ever in one again………………….

At the time of posting tonight it’s 39F under clear blue skies.  No snow on the ground.  All is well and we’ll cross the border early Wednesday morning for a leisurely drive home to Bayfield and hour and a half away.  And that will of course include a Tim Hortons coffee and apple fritter donut to boot:))))))   UPDATE:: Kelly just noticed the new updated weather forecast and they are now calling for possible freezing rain in the area. Wednesday morning.  Awwww Nuts!!!!  All this way and  so close to home  too.  Freezing rain or chance of freezing rain means ROAD SALT!!!!  ‘Arrrrggghhhhh!

GROANER’S CORNER:(( An elderly gent was invited to his old friends' home for dinner one evening. He was impressed by the way his buddy preceded every request to his with endearing terms-Honey, My Love, Darling, Sweetheart, Pumpkin, etc. The couple had been married almost 70 years, and clearly they were still very  much in love. While the wife was in the kitchen, the man leaned over and said to his host, "I think it's wonderful that, after all these years, you still call your wife those loving pet names." The old many hung his head. "I have to tell you the truth," he said, "I forgot her name about 10 years ago."

Two tourists were driving through Louisiana. As they were approaching Natchitoches, they started arguing about the pronunciation of the town. They argued back and forth until they stopped for lunch. As they stood at the counter, one tourist asked the employee, "Before we order, could you please settle an argument for us? Would you please pronounce where we are...very slowly?" The employee leaned over the counter and said, "Burrrrrrrr, gerrrrrrr, Kiiiiing."

  2. Looks like you might wait later in the day to let the Road Salt get tossed to the side of the road by the other vehicles.
Be Safe staying warm and Enjoy getting back home.

    It's about time.

  3. Wow, good job getting through Indianapolis!!! Long day but it looks like there isn't as much snow in the area as we all thought. Maybe spring is coming. Maybe a morning spent doing some more of 'nothing' until the freezing rain and salt are gone before heading on home might be wise. Safe travels!!!!

  4. CB serves a good breakfast and a late start might be a good idea. I hope you wake up super early and find the rain has not made it yet and out run it home, safely of course.

  5. Be safe those last few miles. Tom and I have stopped at that Cracker Barrel in Flint for a late breakfast many times as we headed north after leaving our son and his family down by Detroit. After the water problems in Flint we now stop at the one near Frankenmuth. Port Huron was a way better choice...

  6. Glad you got your last Cracker Barrel fix. I was checking their website the other day and they have a trip planner so you can go from Cracker Barrel to Cracker Barrel across the country.
