OUR DEPARTURE DATE IS COMING UP FAST

DSC_0035
Yikes, it kinda dawned on me this morning that we only have about a week & a half left before we head out. That departure date is suddenly coming on fast. Plans are still the same. We will head to Spencerport NY first to visit with Kelly's Mother for a bit. Talked by phone to my Aunt Jean yesterday, her health is improving, & she is optimistic about flying out see us in Arizona again this winter. That means we will not be driving down to Sarasota Florida after leaving Kelly’s Mom’s place.

From Spencerport, I had considered heading west through Buffalo, Cleveland, & Cincinnati, but think we'll probably stick to our original idea of heading south to Knoxville Tennessee & then sliding west through Nashville & Memphis. I’m sure we’ll be in for some far nicer scenery that way as we travel down through the Appalachian Mountains.  I’ve never been through that neck of the woods.  Once west of Memphis we'll play it by ear as to which way we will go from there. Maybe our old familiar route, maybe not. I always like traveling with the flexibility to make changes along the way. Traveling strictly from point A to point B under the restrictions of time limits & destination reservations just does not work for either one of us. Guess it's maybe some of that adventurous Gypsy blood we both seem to have in us.  But, in all fairness, I must say, we do occasionally have our tough times at the end of a long driving day trying to figure out & find a spot to pull in for the night.

A CARPET OF GOLDEN PINE NEEDLES IN THE PARKING LOT OF OUR PARK’S CLUBHOUSE TONIGHT
Weather today was cold, cloudy, rainy, & damp, but at least the gusting winds from the previous day had subsided so it made being outside more tolerable if one could dodge all the cold raindrops. I couldn't......so stayed inside:((

Turkey with all the fixins & pumpkin pie for our Thanksgiving today. Nice & quiet, just the way we like it.  Kelly & I both stopped eating potatoes quite awhile ago so it was nice to have mashed potatoes with turkey gravy tonight for a change.  Not very often I eat too much anymore but tonight was an exception.  Sun finally broke through the rain soaked clouds in late afternoon leaving our fiery leaved trees basking in a shiny blaze of splendid Autumn color.

GROANER'S CORNER:(( How's this for a typical Mexican weather report.......Chili today and hot tamale. Worrying is stupid. It's like walking around with an umbrella, waiting for it to rain.  Hmmmm, must have rain on the brain today. What do you call a whole months worth of rain? ...... England.

  1. Happy Thanksgiving to you Al and Kelly, and Pheebs, too! Hope your trip South will take off without any problems, and you will soon be enjoying yourselves on the road again. Nice to see the weather there driving you out, eh?

  2. My memory may be faulty, but it seems to me your trips to and from the southwest usually involve lots of miles and egg salad sandwiches each day. Are you implying that this trip might be a little slower with interesting stops along the way?

  7. Happy Thanksgiving.

TN has some very nice views and curvy roads to enjoy. We will be Knoxville on the 23rd and 24th to visit family.

  8. I have always found that the route west from Knoxville is determined by the weather. Be ready to change your plans often, which I'm sure you are anyway.

  13. Have you driven the Natchez Trace from Nashville to Natchez? The speed limit is 50 mph... no commercial traffic. A couple of campgrounds... Very scenic and should be especially nice this time of year. Nice is you're not in a hurry. Happy Thanksgiving!

Our departure date for camping our way across Utah to Zion National Park area is also coming up fast... shooting for two weeks from today! Fall In Zion should just be getting underway...

  17. Happy Thanksgiving! You "do" know that you get to eat an "additional" Thanksgiving dinner in the U.S. in November. ;-)

I honestly think Thanksgiving is my favorite meal of the year!

  18. Yes, go south! Stop along the way at Gettysburg then get on Skyline Drive in Shenandoah National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway. As others have said take The Natchez Trace from Nashville to Natchez. You can then 'beat feet' from there to Congress in your normal fashion, egg sandwiches and all.

  19. We gave in and had a Thanksgiving dinner. Now we will have another one with family in Florida. Double up, we did.

  20. We would suggest you avoid Oklahoma City... I-40 always under construction somewhere! As soon as we enter eastern Oklahoma, we drop down to Highway 9, just a bit south of the interstate. All good roads! We love Quartz Mountain State Park in western OK and from there we get back up to I-40 or down to I-10 depending on destination.
