TODAY WE MET UP WITH LAURIE & ODEL:))

DSC_3120

We never know who are reading our blogs out there & we bloggers never know when we may have written something that is going to ‘stir the pot’ so to speak.  The Borrego wind Gods obviously took offense at my mention in last night’s blog about the ‘storm that never happened.’  In full blown revenge mode, temperatures dropped late Saturday afternoon & the gusting winds beat us up all night.  For me it was the basic ruin of another day as I was up at 2:30 again unable to sleep.  Headache & feeling yukky.  Yep, gotta watch what you put in these blogs alright!!

We are aware that our time here in the Southwest is rapidly winding down for another season.  We can either remain here in Borrego Springs until it is time to head for home or we can flex our traveling wings & expand our horizons a bit.  Because we have not seen a lot of new territory this year or even the year before, we have opted to bite the gas bullet & head into some new areas we haven’t been before.  I think it is important for us to do it this trip while we are here because it is a long way home & an even longer way back again.

A STRANGE LITTLE BUG

Turned out to be kind of a throw away day for me & I spent a lot of time dozing in my chair & catching up on some computer stuff.  Winds diminished & the day turned out sunny & warm.  Just couldn’t summon up the energy to get with it though.

WE ARE THE 3RD RIG FROM THE RIGHT AT DEAD CENTER

It was just over a year ago at the BBC Breakfast Club in Bisbee Arizona that we first met Laurie & Odel from SEMI-TRUE TALES OF OUR LIFE ON THE ROAD.  Today we met Laurie & Odel for the second time at the Anza Borrego State Park in Borrego Springs California.  They coincidentally arrived in Borrego the same day we did just a few days ago.  I would have to say they are one of the most well known & liked couples out here in the RVing blogging world & all the folks that have have met Laurie & Odel would surely agree.  Easy folks to talk to & feel at ease with.  We had been following Laurie’s blog about their recent Motor Home’s renovations & today it was nice to see how well all the work turned out.  It’s a new Scoopy for them, they are happy with the results & it shows.  We stayed for an hour & half covering the usual RV topics about travels, friends in common, future plans & past reflections.  All the best in your journey guys.

THE STORM THAT NEVER WAS & TODAY WE MET JEAN & SKIP:))

DSC_0012

The first lite raindrop patters on our roof started about 5:10 a.m. & at first light we could see the heavy overcast clouds sitting on the mountain tops to our north.  The wind had subsided & temps had not gone into the dumpster as we had feared.  Could it be that we dodged a predicted nasty weather bullet for the day.

IT’S A RAMBLER BUT I DON’T KNOW WHAT YEAR

Dozed off this morning with my finger resting on the K key & woke up a few minutes later with about a hundred million thousand K’s on my screen.  Hate when that happens!!

BORREGO SPRINGS FRIDAY MORNING FARMER’S MARKET ON CHRISTMAS CIRCLE

Kelly found another email in our Spam folder this morning.  This one from a couple in San Antonio, Texas.  Bothers me to no end thinking people have taken the time to email us & those emails sometimes may have ended up in a Spam or Trash bin without us ever seeing them!!

DSC_3084

Didn’t head out for the Jeep tour this morning thinking it may have been called off because of rain.  That might not stop the hard core Jeep people but these tours are generally older folks who do not want to mess up their Jeeps real bad.  We fall under that category.  I see no point in causing serious & expensive repairs to a vehicle if you don’t have to.  A lot of sensible fun can be had with a Jeep without hanging if off a cliff somewhere, running it high & dry on a pile of jagged rocks or burying it in a sea of swamp mud.

DSC_0003

Well, the big storm that was to be….never was.  A smattering of raindrops for a few minutes on our morning walk & then it ended.  Doggy guys weren’t into going far this morning so Kelly headed back to the rig with them.  Had both cameras with me so kept on going & ripped right up the side of Coyote Mountain.  Well, maybe ‘ripped’ wasn’t the right word as I slowly made my along the well worn path on what was more of a Senior’s trail than anything else.  A year ago about this time I have some photos of Max up on the trail with me but he’s just not able to make it that far anymore..DSC_0016

Small bunches of wildflowers here & there but the lady at the Nature store told us a few days ago they don’t expect the desert blooms to be spectacular this year.  Lack of rain & freezing temperatures a few weeks ago have put a damper on the flower show this year.  Spent a leisurely couple hours wandering the hillsides of lower Coyote mountain before returning to the Motor Home & jumping into the shower.

DSC_0004

Last summer we received an email from a couple in British Columbia with a few travel & boon docking questions.  They had been reading our blog & were interested in the Southwest.  They left BC in their Motor Home last November 3rd, just three days before the Bayfield Bunch left Ontario.  We have remained in touch with them & followed their travels.  Today we met Jean & Skip at Kendalls Café in Borrego Springs.  Although not boon docked too far away from each other we decided to meet at the restaurant.  Jean & Skip have 3 dogs like us & it’s not always easy to have folks over.  Always a bit of a hassle trying to talk with people & keep a watchful eye on 3 dogs wandering around all in different directions.

KELLY, JEAN & SKIP LEAVING KENDALL’S CAFE

We all hit if off right away because the 4 of us are much alike with our thinking, lifestyle, thoughts, plans & ideas.  Like us, Jean & Skip are a quiet couple who keep to themselves & when you get 2 quiet couples together it is like a manic Magpies convention.  Jean & Skip are our kind of people & we felt totally comfortable with them.  They are not conventional thinkers & that appealed to us.  We had met for lunch but chatted for so long in the Café we were almost ready to order again from the supper menu.  We will see them again for sure.

DSC_3088-1

Weather continued to improve all day with sunny sky’s finally prevailing about mid afternoon.  Warmer days headed our way as well.  The fellow from the 5th wheel parked a few hundred yards from us walked over late afternoon & I recognized him right away from our other stays here at the Clark Dry Lake Bed.  Keith & his wife Marilyn come to Borrego Springs every year from Washington State & we first met them here about 4 years ago.  Nice people.

DSC_3074

Got myself up onto the roof this afternoon & cleaned the solar panels before putting them up.  It was nearly a year ago that I put them down before leaving here to begin our long journey home.  I imagine a month from now we will likely be on the road for home again by this time.  Sure seems like the Season is going by so fast again………

I SPRAYED THAT RED SPOT ON THE ROOF TO REMIND MYSELF NOT TO STEP THERE BECAUSE IT IS A ‘SOFT SPOT’

GROANER’S CORNER:((  A drunken man gets on the bus late one night, staggers up the aisle, and sits next to an elderly woman. She looks the man up and down and says, 'I've got news for you. You're going straight to hell.' The man jumps up out of his seat and shouts, 'Oh no, I'm on the wrong bus, I wanted to go to Baltimore.'

RECOGNIZED IN BORREGO SPRINGS

DSC_0048

ACTIVITY CENTER AT THE ‘SPRINGS OF BORREGO’

Anyone who has boon docked at the Clark Dry Lake Bed near Borrego Springs knows about…..the wind!!!!  We actually left early last March because of it & last night the wind was back to remind us just who was the big Boss around this place!!  We rock & rolled all night with all the usual flapping slide awning sounds.  Surprised to see our satellite dish still up this morning but my unsightly jury rigged ropes seem to have done the job.  Nice fiery sunrise straight out our windshield to start the day:))

DESERT FLOWERS ARE COMING INTO BLOOM

Today we welcome new blog Follower, Molly Pinner.  Thanks for climbing aboard Molly, hope you like dogs…….:))

DSC_3061We Canadians often have concerns & worries about our border crossing entering the States every fall.  Never hear too much about the American folks & their concerns when entering Canada though.  Donna has some thoughts about that as well as some ‘do’s & don’ts at the border.  You can read her post at, OUR ADVENTURES WITH TASSIE.  And, excitement is building over at ON THE ROAD TO RETIREMENT as the final few days are counted down to ‘hitting the road’ for these folks.  Sticks & Bricks is about empty & the Rig is about full & ready to roll:))  In another blog I am reminded of winter’s gone by & how we have a tendency to complain about the weather. Jenny remembers back to the days as a child when there was no electricity, no running water & no indoor plumbing.  I recall some of these same things as well.  Check out Jenny’s post on what it was like on a cold winter’s night with no central heating & sharing a cold bedroom with 5 Siblings.  HUNKERED DOWN & REMINISCING.

DSC_3060 The Desert Nature Center on Borrego’s main street puts out a publication called, The Sand Paper in which it lists all it’s upcoming events & interests for people.  Hiking, Jeeping, desert flower tours, bird trips, field trips of the area & Astronomy are but a few of the many, many, interests offered.  The visitor’s center at the Anza-Borrego State Park in town also offers a weekly series of events & happenings as well.  This is but one of the many reasons I like Borrego Springs.  So much to see, do & learn.  And, the majority of these programs are free.  A person can be on the go almost daily if so inclined.  We have done a couple Jeep tours through PALO VERDE & GRAPEVINE CANYON & I have enjoyed 2 Astronomy seminars, an EARLY MORNING PHOTO CLASS, a GUIDED HIKE UP GHOST MOUNTAIN & an informative talk & static demonstration by Anza Borrego’s only flying pilot who in a blog last year I referred to as, MIGHTY MOUSE.  Mighty Mouse’s gender might surprise you.  If you have an adventurous & inquisitive mind plus the time & interest in nature then Borrego Springs California is for you.

WE SOMETIMES HAVE TO CARRY THE MOTORMOUSE BECAUSE SHE DOESN’T LIKE ROUGHER GROUND

Consensus from commenters & emailers seems to be the problem with our slide may very well be centered with the slide switch.  I will follow the suggestions sent in starting with unscrewing the panel & give it a good blast with compressed air in there around the switch itself.   As readers have suggested we’ll have a good look at the wiring on that switch as well.

OUR TRADITIONAL JILBERTOS STOP

Despite saying we were going to relax for a couple days it didn’t take us long to end up at the Farmer’s Market on Christmas Circle this morning.  Quick stop at the grocery store & then it was off to Jilbertos for my yearly burg & fries.  Great as ever I may add.  Borrego Springs looks exactly the same as we left it last March except we noticed they must have got that hard freeze awhile back because we can see the frostbite damage to some of the trees & shrubs.  Kelly wanted to stop in at THE SPRINGS OF BORREGO to check out the book exchange.   Took some pics as we drove in & around the beautiful palm tree lined onsite golf course.  Sure is a nice looking place & it was here we had another one of our amazing coincidental blog reader encounters.

A FEW PHOTOS AS WE DROVE THROUGH ‘SPRINGS OF BORREGO’ TODAY

DSC_0043

Just as we parked the Jeep outside the Activities area building a fellow walking by glanced at the Jeep’s windshield where we have a ‘Bayfield Bunch’ sticker.  He hesitated, turned around & as Kelly climbed out of the Jeep he asked, “are you really the Bayfield Bunch?”  Kelly assured him we were & he said, “well, it’s because of your blog that my wife & I now come to Borrego Springs.”  Apparently while they were over on the other side of the Salton Sea a few years or so ago his wife accidentally stumbled across our blog after Googling some RV sites.  She began following our blog & became interested in our enthusiasm for Borrego Springs & decided to come over for a look see.  Like us, they fell in love with the little town & have been returning here ever since.  His name was Chris Church & he said they were staying in the RV Park there for a few days.  He told us his site number & said his wife Sheryl would love to meet us.  Minutes later we were sitting in Chris & Sheryl’s beautiful Allegro Bay Bus chatting about the coincidence of meeting, reasons for coming to Borrego Springs, travels & other wild stories.  RV folks do that you know:))  Chris phoned another couple to come over & meet us as well so it turned into quite an unexpected 30 minutes of socializing for the elusive Bayfield Bunch.  Always great to meet nice people though:))

SPOTTED THIS 1967 MOTOR TYPE HOME ON BORREGO’S MAIN STREET

We were back to the rig shortly after 1 p.m. & spent a relaxing afternoon inside.  Nice sunny day but the wind gusts buffeting the rig felt cool.  We were both tired from Thursday’s all night rock & rolling in the wind.  I see this ‘being tired a lot’ as another down side to this not so nice aging thing!!

DSC_3062

There is a Jeep tour in the morning heading out for South Palm Wash but with a limit of only 7 Jeeps we have missed the registration cut.   Lady said come anyway because if the predicted bad weather shows up some folks won’t go anyway.  We’ll see how things shape up in the morning.  Another Jeep tour went out today over to Ocotillo Wells but we were to late to register for that one as well.  I remember the the last couple years no registration was required.  Folks just met Saturday morning at Christmas Circle & with a leader, headed off out into the desert to predetermined spots.  We are not normally group people but the advantage of the Jeep group for us is the driving experience & knowledge of seasoned Jeepers.  The 2 previous Jeep tours we have been on here have been very informative in learning the history & geography of the area.

DSC_0044

A check of the weather tonight tells us we have a 90% chance of rain in the morning & it’s probably going to be a lot colder over the next couple days.  After that it’s back to warmer weather.  In the meantime it looks like an inside day for us tomorrow.

DSC_0004

GROANER’S CORNER:((   Gallagher is in Boston and he is waiting patiently, also, he is watching the traffic cop on a busy street crossing.
The cop stops the flow of traffic and shouts, 'Okay pedestrians'.  Then he allows the traffic to pass. He did this several times, and Gallagher is still standing on the sidewalk.
After the cop has shouted 'Pedestrians' for the tenth time, Gallagher approaches him and says, 'Is it not about time ye let the Catholics across?'
