IT WAS A MONTH AGO TODAY………

BAYFIELD’S BEACH  (NIKON D50)

It was one month ago today our hearts were immediately won over as we met the newest member of the Bayfield Bunch for the very first time.  We have been soooooooo pleased with our little Pheebe girl.  What an exceptionally smart, eager and affectionate best Pal she has turned out to be.  And, what a clown.  In one short month she has added so much sunlight to our lives with her playful antics and outgoing personality.  It takes us back to Max's exuberant younger days.  How great it is having a new best friend once again to walk the forest paths, mountain trails and desert ways.

SURE IS A DOG’S LIFE AROUND HERE  (CANON AF730)
Wednesday turned out to be a real grinder of a day for me but my spirits were lifted Wednesday night by getting together with one of my two best friends for another marathon four and a half hour non stop talkathons with neither of us taking time to draw a breath.  I absolutely love the kinds of conversations we have.  No small talk, no politics, no sports, and no beating around the bush about anything as we just flow seamlessly from topic to topic.  We are always on the same wavelength, have a lot in common and a lot to talk about whenever we get together:))  Many years ago this fellow was my Boss and right from the time we met in 1975 we clicked, understood each other and became best friends over the years.  It was this fellow and his wife who in 1979 went out of their way to help me.  It was they who pointed me in the direction of AA when I had a serious drinking problem.  It was this fellow who made the phone call that changed my life.

Noticed someone in the Shout Box questioned my spelling of harbor/harbour so figured I had better look that up on Google.  One site simply said, Harbor or Harbour?  'Both are correct. It depends on where you are from.'  In America you write a check and in Canada we write a cheque.  In Canada, a U is sometimes added behind an O.  I sometimes just go with whatever spelling Microsoft's Live Writer suggests.  Always good to have people point things out.  I appreciate that.

Wondering if anyone is familiar with the areas around Durango and Cortez in the Four Corners area of Colorado.  Boon docking areas, RV Parks, State Parks, special attractions, etc.  We will be looking for a few good home bases to do day trips from in those parts.  Am thinking of taking highway 160 from Walsenburg through Alamosa and Pagosa Springs.  We plan to be in that area somewhere around October 20th or so.  No idea where we will be going after that but we'll figure it out once we get there.  We are always open to suggestions, ideas and information regarding great wilderness and scenic areas.

Why isn't phonetic spelled the way it sounds?
Why are there interstate highways in Hawaii?
Why are there flotation devices under plane seats instead of parachutes?
Why are cigarettes sold in gas stations when smoking is prohibited there?
Why do fat chance and slim chance mean the same thing?
If you can't drink and drive, why do you need a driver's license to buy liquor, and why do bars have parking lots?
Do you need a silencer if you are going to shoot a mime?
Have you ever imagined a world with no hypothetical situations?
How does the guy who drives the snow plow get to work in the mornings?
If 7-11 is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, why are there locks on the doors?

  2. So glad you had a great friend to help you when you needed one..We should all be so lucky. Looks like you are getting ready to "get the Hell out of Dodge/Bayfield" very soon. I wish we could leave earlier, but McGuyver is a frustrated farmer and needs to help "bring in the Harvest"....Would love to see you sometime..maybe Hickiwan this winter..who knows??

  4. You might look at the Dolores River RV Park and Cabins http://www.doloresriverrvparkandcabins.com/activities.html

I stopped there a couple of years ago and found it a nice place to stay on the river, under the trees and near the area attractions.

  5. Pheebe is the just the right match for you three. Congrats. That other one wasn't meant to be yours, even though you were so disappointed at the time.

My rescued near-blind dog, Misty and I didn't find each other until she was nearly 15 years old. She is a great joy and comfort for me, and I know that she is happy now after years of abuse. She tells me so!

I don't care how you spell honour, harbour, neighbour, etc. as I am from England, and we spell properly, too.

Misty and I are so thrilled for you.

  7. A month - boy time does fly. And she has brought so much happiness in such a short period of time. Pheebes - you are a ham. No wonder Motormouse sits and watches her antics.

  10. Re. 4-Corners area etc. I was down there many years ago. First be sure to see the Great Sanddunes area at Blanca. That is along Hwy 160. Then you might want to explore along Hwy 149 west of Alamosa. That Hwy runs along the Rio Grande and it's a beautiful valley. I have camped for free on the left side of that Hwy. down by the river that is east and down below of Creede. Creede is a very beautiful old restored mining town you've gotto see. I just dumped into it by coincidence and was right away invited for a coffee into a Cafe. Hope you find that helpful.

  11. Pheebe is a complete goof. And I mean that in the nicest way!

And in keeping with the spelling theme, my built in dictionary underlines that one, trying to convince me it's wrong. I always spelled it Phoebe, but I guess that's like the harbour/harbor thing.

  14. Al,

For what it is worth I drove through Durango on Sept 1st on my way from Montrose, CO to Albuquerque, NM. From reading your blog and our one brief visit I think you would be happiest if you were camped near Cortez rather than Durango.

You will be closer to Mesa Verde which has to be on your To Do List. It is also a smaller town than Durango which I think you would like.
No recommendations for a Camp in that area however. I will recommend Cadillac Ranch RV Park in Bluff, UT for a good commercial park. Or you would probably prefer Goosenecks State Park which is a free no facilities campground.

    Happy Trails!

  16. Hi Al:
I just drove Hwy 160 thru that area last month. Check out my blog for photos & info-- http://winnieviews.blogspot.com

There was road construction just west of South Fork that cut the road down to 1 lane for about 5 miles and required waiting about 30 minutes before a lead car drove the pack thru. Hopefully that should all be finished by the time you go through.

Wolf Creek Pass area was kind of disappointing because of such pine beetle infestation.

I agree with the other poster that Durango will likely not be your cup of tea for camping, but a great town to do a few day trips to (the commerical CGs there were all pretty expensive).

I stayed a Passport America park in Cortez when I visited Mesa Verde. It was ok, but nothing special. I did like Cortez though, and the town called Dolores is nice too. I think there's some good camping up around the reservoir there (State Park?)

Mancos State Park might be an option too-- halfway between Durango and Cortez.

Although not quite on your route, I also enjoyed the town of Salida north of the Great Sand Dunes a little bit. They had a nice boondocking area along the Arkansas river south of town (just south of the commercial RV park). Great downtown area there too...and a nice Safeway grocery:-)

I'll be interested to see your photos of that area at that time of year...I'm sure you'll get some great ones!

  17. Getting into this one a little late, but wanted to add some ideas for the 4 corners area. We drove thro' the Colorado section in July and it was fabulous. I wasn't too big a fan of Durango, but enjoyed getting out in nature both East and West of there. Be careful of the passes in Oct w/ snow...you could get caught.
Couple of "highlights" on our 4-corners area:
    1/ Mesa Verde National Park
    http://wheelingit.wordpress.com/2011/07/05/land-of-the-cliff-dwellers-mesa-verde-national-park-co/
2/ Dolores, the galloping goose and Anasazi Heritage Center
    http://wheelingit.wordpress.com/2011/07/11/ancients-galloping-geese-dolores-co/
    3/ Pagosa Springs
    http://wheelingit.wordpress.com/2011/06/30/playing-in-natures-paradise-pagosa-springs-co/

For camping we stayed at McPhee State Park in Dolores, National Forest in Pagosa Springs and a private park near Mesa Verde (although we DID find boondocking only ~10 miles from there). I've got reviews & pics of all the parks on my blog if you need them incl. directions to the boondocking sites.

    Enjoy!! Its a great area!
    Nina
