CHRISTMAS DAY WITH SOME SNOWY MEMORIES

DSC_0009

Had ourselves a mighty fine quiet Christmas day.  It seems to me if folks were brought up with snow at Christmas time it just isn’t quite the same Christmas without snow.  Have always found it difficult to get into the Christmas spirit here in the southwest each year.  Maybe if it snowed a couple days before the big day it might help.  As much as I dislike the winter months back home in Canada I do miss the beautiful winter scenes with snow on heavy laden pine bows, clear blue sky’s with forests of evergreens stretching across a snowy white landscape.  Snow drifts curling into ice cream like gigantic snow cones.  I sometimes miss the crunch of snow underfoot, the clear crisp early morning air that makes your breath stand on end & the Blue Jay’s calling from nearby forests & trees.  Striking red Cardinals stand out against the white snow as they flit back & forth from their protective Cedar trees to front yard bird feeders.  Yes, there a few things I miss about winter in Canada alright……but just a few:))

A CANADIAN WINTER IN OUR NECK OF THE WOODS

The folks over at TRAVEL WITH JEAN & SKIP are in one of our favorite boon docking areas right now just west of Ajo, Arizona.  The Darby Wells loop road runs from Ajo out around some of the greatest Sonoran Desert scenery around before looping back again into Ajo.  We just loved the scenic boon docking spot we had here back in late February of 08.  AJO HIGHLANDS 1     AJO HIGHLANDS 2  AJO HIGHLANDS 3  AJO HIGHLANDS 4.  For anyone not familiar with the SONORAN DESERT I like to think of it as the green desert & home of the mighty Saguaro Cactus.  One of our favorite southern Arizona areas for sure.

THE GREENING SONORAN DESERT…..OUR FAVORITE KIND OF DESERT:))  PHOTOS TAKEN AT HICKIWAN TRAILS, WHY ARIZONA

For anyone traveling in southern Arizona west of Tucson or looking for a quiet affordable winter RV Park away from the mainstream I would recommend you head for HICKIWAN TRAILS RV PARK in Why, Arizona.  Kelly & I have lots of great memories from this area & have stayed here several times plus surrounding boon docking areas.  Last time there we put together the Hickiwan Trails blog site for them.  The CAVE DWELLERS spent a fair bit of time there last winter enjoying themselves as well.  It is only a 20 minute drive down to the ORGAN PIPE CACTUS NATIONAL MONUMENT where you can take a great scenic 25 mile loop drive through the Ajo Mountain Range.

WATER BREAK ON ONE OF OUR MANY, MANY, MORNING WALKS AT HICKIWAN TRAILS A FEW YEARS AGO

I just found a photo below I had been looking for quite awhile ago.  This was taken in Borrego Spring’s (California) Palm Canyon our first year there.  We were returning down the trail from the Palms when we heard the scuffle of small rocks falling.  We didn’t see anything but I randomly took a picture of the steep rock face anyway.  It wasn’t until later that night when I enlarged the photo that I was surprised to see what had caused a few rocks to dislodge.  Look very closely & then start counting.  Tip….Big Horn Sheep, but how many:))

I must say again how much our Cradlepoint router has changed & greatly improved our computer routines here in the Motor Home.  Mornings are a good example of how well our new system is working & I’m sure there are many other couples out there who can identify.  Took a little shuffling at first but we have both settled into our favorite computer spots with me in my comfy Ikea Poang chair & Kelly over by the door at our new but smaller computer desk.  We each have our own internet surfing habits, favorite programs & sites to look at, but sometimes we land on the same site or email program at the same time.  We kinda randomly banter back & forth about things we are reading & it’s sorta neat how we discuss this or that blog, maybe read email excerpts back & forth, or comment on some morning news item etc.  Sometimes we’ll send links back & forth as well.  Although we are only a few feet apart, the info sent probably travels untold thousands of miles between the two laptops in the blink of an eye….or less.   Most amazing when I think back to when I was a small boy & we didn’t even know what a television set was.  The photo below gives you an idea of our daily computer station configuration.

We took the dinette out of our rig 3 years ago & never did replace it with anything to eat on.  First question from folks is, ‘where do you eat?’  Our answer to that question is, ‘anywhere we can.’  We know it isn’t the best set up but we had to reconfigure the rig’s interior to make things workable for two humans & 3 dogs or as Kelly would tell you, 1 human & 4 dogs.  I generally eat my meals right in my chair with my computer on my lap…..and sometimes I end up in quite a slurpy mess.  In the photo below I actually did end up dumping a small load of soup on my T-shirt.  I do my own laundry by the way!! .  Boot Camp taught me that back in 65:))

GROANER’S CORNER:((  Did you know Cuba’s National Anthem is, ‘Row row row your boat.’  And, did you also know that you can get a sweet little old lady to curse by having another sweet little 80 year old lady yell "Bingo:))”

  2. I counted six big horn sheep, but then I'm used to tracking feathers, not fur! Gonna give us the answer?? :)

  3. Gorgeous pictures of the snow up north. Sure is pretty, but I definitely don't want to live in it anymore.

We can totally relate to the "no dinette" eating situation. We took our table and chairs out also, and we both eat our meals on our laps while sitting in our recliners. It's such a non-issue to us but so unusual to others. It's only really a hassle when we try to have guests over for a meal.

And by the way, Fred has about the same luck as you while eating :) I used to think a giant bib would be the answer, but lately more like a full-on biohazard suit would be more appropriate.

Thanks again for the cool pictures.

  5. Some of the best snow shots I've ever seen. The contrast with the desert pictures made them even more spectacular!

We have the same Verizon and Cradlepoint router setup as you and Kelly and are just as high on it as you are. It's a great combo!

  7. I too do laundry, and the military ingrains other habit's like making the bed the minute you roll out of it and being dressed as soon as your feet hit the floor.Looks like you have plenty of room to eat in to me. Be safe out there. Sam & Donna...

  8. I believe I saw 6 Big Horn Sheep but I have a feeling some of the blur(s) I saw could have been more. As for Christmas without snow, we felt the same here in Florida (just not the same).

  9. Fabulous photos, even the deep snow. I belong to the eat-on-my-lap group too — even at home. Besides, the dinning table is always full of "other stuff". We're definitely "horizontally challenged" — if it's flat, it acquires "stuff" on top of it! LOL

  10. OK - I really enlarged the image on my screen, and my "wouldn't it be great" mind thinks it may have seen as many as ten.

As for the wintery Christmas in Bayfield, I feel exactly the same way thinking back to our mountain retreat in Butte, Montana. I'd love to be transported back there for a day -- fully clothed and insulated, of course -- but I'd want to be brought right back home to SE Arizona!

  11. I love cold and snowy, as in your pictures. What I dont care for is just cold!

I'm debating how I can take my dinette out to give Lady more room and me more space, but don't know enough about truck campers yet to know what I'd be dealingwith in the way of storage compartments, tanks, etc.

  12. We enjoyed your winter photos. It is our first winter without snow or any of our 3 sons. I see today it is snowing in our old home, Connecticut. 'Wish we could transport ourselves back for one day and be back to AZ by morning.

    Take Care, Terry

  13. Nice winter shots, and I'm glad they have it up there in Canada, but for me, I think right here in Arizona is the right way to enjoy winter.

Also I resemble that arm chair method of computing, with the cradle point router on the dash in the big windshield of the motor home. It seems to get much better reception up there.

But with all the lookback of photos from previous years, I wonder if you aren't getting a tad restless to move on to new digs!

  14. Glad you had a good Christmas and enjoyed a no-snow day. I loved those snow pics...they are some of the best I've seen.
We too have the verizon and cradlepoint internet set up.
    Take care and be safe.

  16. You guys look so comfy there in your puter spaces. We do the cradlepoint router too, even at home, so hubby can share my aircard too. With careful use, we do not go over our 5gb limit.

Do I see a white curtain between the living area and the front cockpit area on your rig? Don't you swivel your seats around to make more seating?

    Just curious....
